Fifes and Drums at Colonial Williamsburg

© Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Va.

Colonial Williamsburg’s world-renowned Fifes and Drums corps performs nearly 500 times a year. Visitors are most likely to encounter the trilling fifes and beating drums on Duke of Gloucester Street, Colonial Williamsburg’s main thoroughfare in the Historic Area.

Though often mistaken for British soldiers because of their red coats, the musicians' uniforms represent those of the Virginia State Garrison Regiment. These troops were authorized in May 1778 by the Virginia General Assembly to defend eastern Virginia during the Revolution, especially the capital at Williamsburg.
