Whether you drive, fly, or hop an Amtrak train, Washington, DC is just 136 miles from Philadelphia and makes an ideal destination for a romantic weekend getaway.

Given that parking is a challenge and expensive in garages in the nation's Capitol, you may want to opt for the latter two transportation choices and get around using the well-designed metro.

There's never a paucity of things to see or do in DC; it's always tough whittling down where to go. If you've never visited Washington, DC before, the Smithsonian Institution and the National Air and Space Museum should definitely top your list (be forewarned: they are kid magnets).

The National Mall is a beautiful greensward amidst the city's stately federal buildings and museums. Take a romantic stroll and you'll also take in the view of the Washington and Lincoln memorials as well as the always affecting Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Like big-eyed, furry, rare bears? Then a stop at the National Zoo to meet young Tian Tian and her giant panda companions is a must.

Weekend visitors to Washington, DC will also want to explore her neighborhoods: collegiate-buzzing Georgetown, fun and funky Dupont Circle, and ethnic-eateries extravaganza Adams-Morgan all beckon.
