The Wedgewood Hotel in a Nutshell:

Vancouver's most romantic hotel, The Wedgewood is only 25 years old, yet its decor and decorum evoke the opulence of an earlier era. The Wedgewood consistently earns kudos from Trip Advisor and top travel magazines. Hands-on management by the owners and the care they take in burnishing every detail enabled The Wedgewood to recently attain membership in the prestigious Relais & Chateau group. From the top-hatted doorman who greets arrivals, to the bathtubs-for-two and in-room fireplaces, to the penthouse balconies that boast panoramic city views, the Wedgewood is an ideal place to start or nurture a romance.

Guest Rooms at the Wedgewood Hotel:

Traditional wood furnishings, plush textiles, and accents such as soft throws on the beds and textured wallpaper add great charm to guest rooms in this 83-room hotel. Each unit has a marble shower and most have a bathtub; deluxe executive rooms have a large triangular tub. Amenities to induce a long stay include flatscreen TVs and with a DVD player, microwaves, free wi-fi, and a safe big enough for a laptop. You’ll want to reserve a Wedgewood Suite: Some have his-and-her bathrooms. Others have the tub next to the bedroom, with no separating wall. Evening amenities include bottled water and freshly baked cookies.

Dining at the Wedgewood Hotel:

The Wedgewood Hotel's romantic ground-floor Bacchus restaurant recalls the Victorian era. Decorated with dark wood, beveled mirrors, plush burgundy velvet upholstery, and Murano lighting fixtures, it has ample banquettes for two to linger over a meal. In addition to offering breakfast, lunch, and dinner, Bacchus also serves a seductive brunch (consider the vanilla brioche French toast and a Passione sparkler with kir or apricot royale to start) and afternoon high tea on weekends. Its dessert and cheese menu highlights tasty Canadian fare such as Little Qualicum Island brie.

Destination Weddings at the Wedgewood Hotel:

The Wedgewood Hotel hosts wedding receptions for up to 65 guests. Its Liaisons room has a Victorian look similar to Bacchus restaurant. The Eton Cambridge room, on the ground floor, has abundant natural light spilling through its big windows. English hunting paintings add charm and a touch of class. The expansive terrace overlooks the Vancouver Art Gallery and Provincial Law Court gardens waterfall, especially lovely when lit at night.

Honeymoons/Romance Packages at the Wedgewood Hotel:

The Wedgewood Hotel will take great care to create a special romantic setting for guests who request such. Candles around the bathtub for two and rose petals on the bed are among the amenities that set the stage for a memorable stay. And there are several packages to enhance a visit. The bridal night package, for example, includes a bottle of sparkling wine upon arrival, breakfast in bed the following morning, and a Wedgewood souvenir.

Activities at the Wedgewood Hotel:

Named the best day spa in Vancouver, The Wedgewood Hotel's two-treatment-room basement spa has a eucalyptus steam all guests may use. There's a special room for couples massages, which can be performed in-room. The hotel also has a small gym with current equipment. There is no swimming pool or facilities for children. Like to bike? The hotel has a cycling package, and the general manager will (gladly) lead couples on a riding tour of the city and arrange for bike rentals. The Wedgewood Hotel also has a business center with two PC screens on sturdy desks in a handsome, glassed-in room.

Nearby the Wedgewood Hotel:

The Wedgewood is across the street from the Vancouver Art Gallery and the upscale Pacific Center Mall just beyond it. And if you're one of those people who can happily spend hours plying the aisles of a sundries store, the nearby two-story London Drugs is particularly well stocked. The Wedgewood is also convenient and accessible to all of the city's traditional attractions, and the top-hatted bellman can produce a taxi or directions to get you to any of them.

What Could be Improved at the Wedgewood Hotel:

The Wedgewood Hotel deserves its many accolades, and quibbles are few. Those who travel with iPods may be disappointed not to find an in-room player. Last-generation Sony Dream Machines are provided instead. And the business center would be better equipped to serve all guests if it stocked computers than ran both Mac and Windows operating systems.

Is the Wedgewood Hotel Right for You?:

If you're intent on having a stressfree, sensual getaway where you're unlikely to be disturbed, the Wedgewood Hotel certainly fits the bill. If you're able to splurge, consider booking one of its luxurious penthouse suites. These feature a fireplace in both the living room and bedroom, big bathtubs for two that you can access directly from the bedroom, and a large outdoor garden terrace where you can dine, unwind, and take in the city views. Former guests include Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, Pierce Brosnan and his wife. If you're very lucky, future guests will include you and your significant other.
