Every year Sports Illustrated's Swimsuit Edition shows locations where gorgeous women wearing tiny strips of clothing pose for the camera. While most readers pay little attention to the backgrounds, I look at them as potential destinations for honeymoon couples and other romantics.
The 2007 locations in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition are close-to-home this year. There are no European, Polynesian, or truly exotic sands. While cities such as Shreveport and Tucson have their loyalists, they're a comedown after years when we were treated to Thai and Tahitian locations.
What would a Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition be without palm trees swaying in the background? For the 2007 issue shoot, the team boarded a plane and made waves in Maui. Their location was the first-class Four Seasons Resort Maui
, known for its impeccable service and having the most spacious guest rooms on the islands, and the Old Lahaina Luau
. Not a bad place for a honeymoon or romantic getaway after the glamazons depart, of course.
Sports Illustrated once again returned to Los Angeles to shoot its 2007 Swimsuit Edition, as it had in the 2006
issue. This time the models interacted with students and players at a USC field. Not exactly a romantic location, especially when Beverly Hills
is so nearby.
Walking, strutting, or vogue-ing in Memphis, the scantily clad models in the 2007 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition bunked at the top location in town, the The Peabody Memphis
. It's an AAA Four-Diamond hotel that couples have chosen to host weddings and honeymoons for more than a century. The issue was shot at Graceland
; Beale Street; Sun Studio; Stax Museum of American Soul Music; and Humes High School, Elvis' alma mater.
Famous for sun, sand, and sultry weather, Negril, Jamaica welcomed the models and crew behind the 2007 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition to The Caves
, a small (10 cottages), eco-conscious resort. A true romantic getaway, the location holds many hidden grottos, an Aveda spa, and thatched-roof cottages to relax in after a hard day on the beach.
Yucca-ing it up in the dry desert, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition models still managed to keep their cool for location shots at the White Stallion Ranch
in the 2007 issue. The property is a working cattle ranch with an Old West feel where horseback-riding couples can go out for a day with the wranglers.
Showing impressive team spirit, the models in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition 2007 took to the field at Grambling State University and gave the team's musicians ample reasons to strike up the band. Shreveport, located in northwest Louisiana, is popular with couples who enjoy gambling: The area contains five casinos and a Thoroughbred race track.
The bikinis don't get much smaller or the beaches much longer in Bahia, where there's even a Club Med
nearby for sun-and-sand worshipers. Poolside and oceanside, the models of the 2007 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition made the most of this South American location, shooting at and around Txai Resort
. Accommodations consist of thatched-roof bungalows with bathtubs big enough for two. (Or in the case of the SI models, four.)
Last and some would maintain, least Sports Illustrated packed up its models and photographers, stylists and makeup artists and headed to Cleveland, Ohio for an indoor shoot of the 2007 Swimsuit Edition at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame location. While musicians and models have always had a natural affinity, I can't say the same for romantic couples and Cleveland. Sorry, Ohioans.
