The original monument was built on a hill overlooking the city. It stood approximately 140 feet tall and was surrounded by 36 columns. Behind each stood a statue of a god or goddess.

The structure remained intact after the arrival of Alexander the Great and his armies; it took an earthquake during the Middle Ages to destroy it.
