Rovos Rail winds languidly through southern Africa, carrying well-heeled passengers on journeys back in time.

They travel, sleep, dine, and take in views of the vast countryside in Rovos Rail's meticulously maintained Pride of Africa railroad cars built during the first half of the twentieth century.

The passionate vision of one man, Rohan Vos, the private Rovos Rail trains, which run on state-owned railway lines, offer passengers a choice of multi-day itineraries that start and end in major cities but pause at out-of-the way stops along the way that few tourists get to see.

Billing itself as “the most luxurious train in the world,” Rovos Rail was established in 1989. Its rolling stock consists of 75 vintage train carriages and 6 locomotives, many of which had been salvaged and were later entirely overhauled.

At various points in the journey, a steam, diesel, or electric Rovos Rail locomotive carries passengers into the heart of Africa in grand Edwardian style.
