Hackeberga Castle in in a Nutshell:
’s sunny, southernmost province of Skane is packed with historic manor houses. Thirty minutes inland from the harbor city of Malmo
, a fortified Hackeberga Castle was first built in the 16th century on an inlet on a lake of the same name. Perhaps Skane’s most prominent estate today, the present-day, red-brick manor house on the site was built the 1870’s. The copper-roofed and turreted residence has a clubby interior in the old hunting-lodge style of its glory days.
Guest Rooms at Hackeberga Castle:
Hackeberga’s rooms are individually decorated with a combination of antique and modern furnishings. Some come with four-poster beds, most with solid twins put together. Among rooms in the main house, the rear lobby level ones have postcard views of the lake. Several lower level rooms feature French doors that open to the grassy slope down to the lake (sleepwalking not recommended). Rooms with traditional ceramic stove heaters are especially cozy. In the last decade the stables were converted into fourteen rooms of various sizes. Free wi-fi reaches throughout the property.
Dining at Hackeberga Castle:
The manor's dining rooms have the same dark-wood, antique feel as elsewhere on the property. The breakfast buffet is brimming with lox and herring and stocked with fresh local berry juices
. For lunch chef Tomas Gustavsson dreams up two-course meals, while his nightly four-course menu might include venison
with apple, rutabaga and mushroom. Meals are followed by an array of local cheeses. Coffee and drinks are served both in the plush-cushioned lounge or right on the lake-facing patio. In addition to conducting wine tastings, Hackeberga’s expert culinary staff pour samples of Sweden’s Mackmyra
whiskey for guests who arrange in advance.
Destination Weddings and Honeymoons at Hackeberga Castle:
Ceremonies are held waterside with Hackeberga castle as backdrop. For large groups a buy-out for up to 52 overnight guests is preferred. A wedding planner arranges for flowers and decorations, and band or DJ. The Artists’ Room serves up to 90 guests at round tables. The wedding package includes open bar with mojito and cosmopolitan type cocktail options, as well as aperitifs with fish and meat appetizers. A four-course dinner with wines follows. The wedding cake is presented along with cognac and liqueurs, while guests enjoy more food and beer over late night dancing. Couples are served breakfast the next day.
Honeymoons at Hackeberga Castle:
The castle’s honeymoon package includes Champagne with oysters or caviar. The four-course dinner comes with a full wine menu, while post-dinner coffee is served with cognac or whisky. Couples enjoy breakfast the next day. Honeymooners are free to join in all the nature activities the property offers as well.
Activities at Hackeberga Castle:
From July to February, within minutes of rolling out of bed, guests can be fishing for lake pike and perch. More active couples can opt for a quiet jog in the shade around the three-mile-circumference of the lake. The property has a number of well-maintained bikes and just outside the property’s long driveway cyclists can tootle past century-old farmsteads and lose themselves for hours on shaded gravel roads. Local stables have Icelandic horses
available for riding, while an eighteen-hole golf course is minutes away. Couples looking for a quiet pastime can ask for the hotel boules set.
Nearby Hackeberga Castle:
Detailed maps mark the trailheads at the enormous Hackeberga Nature Reserve that stretches for miles beyond the property. A short drive away, costumed re-enactors really know their subject at the Foteviken open-air archaeological museum that showcases Viking village life. Local berry farms sell homemade jams and juices, while wine production is growing in Skane. The popular Angavallen organic restaurant on a pig farm makes for a fine break from touring. A taste of another historic manor with rich gardens can be found just outside Malmo at Karinetorp. In Malmo itself, the Western Harbor hosts Santiago Calatrava’s elegant Turning Torso
What to Watch Out for at the Hotel:
Stone stairs leading down to the former stable rooms are lovely by day, but not well-lighted at night. Discretely tucked away as they are, a handful of small conference rooms upstairs do not fit the historic feel of the manor. There is no receptionist from the mid-afternoon until the next morning.
Vibe at Hackeberga Castle:
Good-looking Swedes are all over Hackeberga, whether on business trips or celebrating events on the patio and in the lounge. Neither the framed old maps and historical texts on the downstairs walls, nor the taxidermy reflecting the hunting lodge past, give off the least bit of a stiff air. Upstairs has a contemporary art gallery feel to it with vibrant paintings by local and international artists mostly rendered directly on the walls. It's a given that Swedish staff are going to be bilingual; at Hackeberga they’re also especially gracious and knowledgeable of their surroundings.
