Morgan Bay Beach Resort in a Nutshell:

In the late 17th century, the British and French took turns seizing St. Lucia from each other, and for the next 150 years this West Indian island distinguished by its twin Pitons switched rulers about a dozen times. Today the English-speaking island’s population still speaks a French patois.

On the northwest coast, all-inclusive Morgan Bay Beach Resort makes a fine base to explore the capital Castries as well as the rugged northern interior. At press time the property had begun upgrading its look and comfort level. Crews have laid down a bed of soft new sand and expanded the beach thirty feet inland, adding loungers and sturdy umbrellas. In rooms at this family-friendly resort, a subtle new color palette has emerged.

Guest Rooms at Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

As part of the resort makeover, most all of Morgan Bay’s 345 rooms are moving from wicker furnishings to an earth-toned contemporary look that includes muted prints on the walls with shell and sea life themes.

Flatscreen TVs are another new feature. Couples who book a Superior Deluxe room in the 500-numbered wing are not only far enough away from the main compound for added peace, but have a beach view and can step out the door onto a slight bluff over the water. The 1200 wing is located hillside, and while a bit of a trek, equally removed from the foot traffic in the main resort area down below. Ocean View Suites come with a Roman tub and enormous balcony looking over the property and sea.

Dining at Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

The resort’s four restaurants cook up a medley of culinary themes. Morgan’s Pier, with its feel of a stage set for Pirates of the Caribbean, specializes in grilled seafood. A table at the end of the covered pier offers the most romantic spot, with the lights of the resort reflecting off the water below.

The open-air Palms makes for a breezy breakfast and lunch buffet atmosphere. As the name suggests, Bambou serves Asian fusion, with a verandah directly in front of the crashing waves. The high-ceiled, plantation-style Le Jardin is the property’s adults-only fine dining room, and requires proper attire and booking. Couples will want to linger after dinner over the live piano accompaniment.

Weddings and Honeymoons at Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

A white, hilltop gazebo in a remote corner of the resort overlooks the sea and is the prime destination wedding spot at Morgan Bay. Morgan’s Pier is also a popular ceremony and reception location, with the sea lapping just below the floor planks.

Onsite wedding planners will customize other venues for couples, including ceremonies directly on the sandy beach. Planners will provide clergy or magistrate, handle government fees, provide best man or maid of honor if needed (as per local law).

A bottle of champagne, wedding cake, flowers and boutonniere are included. More extensive wedding packages include recorded music, manicure and pedicure, and couples massage. A decorated bedroom, and couples dinner and breakfast in bed comes with it as well.

St. Lucian law requires couples to be present three working days prior to the wedding. Honeymooners receive sparkling wine and fresh cut flowers with dinner on a private gazebo. Anniversaries and vow renewals with the same amenities can be booked as well.

Activities at Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

The enormous twenty-acre campus has two tennis courts, but water sports dominate; kayaks, paddle boats, Hobie Cats, water skiing and raucous banana boat excursions are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Among the four swimming pools, two are adult, with the centrally located “Lazy Lagoon” featuring a swim-up bar. Best tip for peace and quiet: head for the small adults-only pool up the hill, with a wooden deck and its own bar named Tommy’s. Until the spa opens, massages are given on the beach.

Couples can shop for high-end jewelry and eyewear in a lobby branch of the island-wide company Colombian Emeralds. The small craft shop next to the mini-market sells locally made artwork. In the evening, steel pan bands perform in the Sunset Bar and Caribbean dance lessons are given.

Nearby Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

Within a thirty minute drive from the resort, couples arrive at the mountain community of Chassin where an open-air gondola takes them on a relaxing ride above the rainforest canopy and a view of Martinique in the distance. Knowledgeable guides can answer any questions on bird life or the medicinal use of plants and trees.

Adrenaline seekers can zip line or hike as well. Among many popular catamaran excursions, a sailing trip goes down the west coast to the Caribbean's only drive-in volcano, the Sulphur Springs and there's an opportunity to swim in Marigot Bay. Some of the day’s options include snorkeling, hiking in cocoa groves, and bathing in muddy volcanic waters. Romantic sunset sailings can be booked too. Ask the resort to hire a driver for shopping in nearby Rodney Bay or the capital Castries. The St. Lucian Carnival, with its spectacular costumes, takes place each July.

What to Keep in Mind about Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

Keep in mind this is a family-friendly property, so couples may wish to avoid the main pool areas where kids can make a lot of noise. The enormous size of the property, particularly for romantics who lodge in the 100 hilltop rooms, can make for long, circuitous walks to get down to the lobby, or can mean hitching a ride on the handful of golf carts that ply the property (a direct stairway is planned from the main hill to cut straight down to the lobby).

Rooms could use electric sockets that are conveniently situated for handy ironing. Some towel racks are placed quite high, and bathrooms presently have no dedicated make-up mirror. Wi-fi access is only available in the lobby and Sunset Lounge.

Vibe at Morgan Bay Beach Resort:

Depending on time of year, the property hosts a strong contingent of Canadians and Brits, as well as guests from some of the French Antillean islands. The vibe is very much pool lounging and ocean-sports oriented, but couples wishing for peace and quiet can easily find it on the outer, more private reaches of the palm tree-filled property.
