Much social life takes place outside the wall of Avila.
Bars, shops, hotels and restaurants stand outside the main archway near the cathedral and across the way in the plaza.
We chose a place to stay within the wall, however. The Hotel El Rastro is a boutique residence in the palace of a 16th century duke. It is a successful blend of the old (exposed brick, rock and beams) and new (sleek and airy).
Our favorite restaurant (not only in Avila but for the entire trip) was El Almacen (920 254455), situated on the opposite side of the River Adaja. Our dinner was enhanced by the view of the walled city across the narrow valley.
