Much of Avila is best appreciated from the outside. While there are plenty of churches and historic buildings to visit within the walls, the attraction for us lay outside.
An esplanade runs along one side of the looming wall.
We enjoyed leisurely strolls, taking in the ancient structure, the swallows sweeping overhead, and, in the other direction, a vista of the surrounding countryside.
