The Royal Yacht Britannia was launched in April 1953 by HM Queen Elizabeth II. In her day she sailed more than million miles on 968 official visits.

She measures 412 feet and 3 inches long and 55 feet at her widest point. The vessel weights 5,862 tons and can reach a maximum speed of 22.5 knots.

The ship called on British Commonwealth nations, those countries that maintain an allegiance to the British Crown. Among the ones that welcomed the Queen were Australia, Canada, Papua New Guinea, the Republic of Ireland, India, New Zealand, and South Africa.

Scotland's top visitor attraction today, the Royal Yacht Britannia has been docked in the historic port of Edinburgh since she was decommissioned in 1997.
