To enter your casita or suite is to feel immediately that you are in a home, not a hotel unit. Dark-stained bamboo floors contrast with pale smooth-plastered walls, which are hung with tasteful, original modern art (available, in most cases, for sale).

Textiles are understated and elegant, and the contemporary furnishings feel unique, not cookie-cutter. There is a definite sense of place; the clean lines and earth-based palette echo the surrounding topography.

A savvy layout ensures that you are presented with the best views of both indoors and out at most turns. Generously sized windows reveal the surrounding vistas, and the suites have outdoor patios outfitted with teak furniture and a fireplace.

Casitas range from 630-700 square feet, while suites are a generous 1,125 square feet. The Vista casitas are the most distant and private, while the Piñon casitas are closer to the main lodge and spa.

Suites feature a deluxe bath area with a deep soaking tub, a spacious separate shower, dual vanities and closets with built-in dresser drawers and shelving, and a heated concrete floor. All baths feature soft bamboo towels, posh, roomy bathrobes and slippers, as well as natural, essential-oil infused soaps and shampoos.

Continuing the feeling of being in an elegant residence: the beautiful kilim rugs, assortment of coffee table art books, and top of the line media offerings (including free wi-fi). Beds are both luxurious (high-thread count Italian bedding with down coverlets) and unbelievably comfortable.

We were offered our choice of morning paper, gratis. Our extensively stocked minibar had beer, wine, liquor, tasty snacks, and complimentary bottled water and sodas.

Most remarkably, Encantado guests are free to tool around the surrounding area in the resort’s gleaming Mercedes SUVs and convertible coupes.
