Quiet and mannered, the Four Seasons San Francisco has the look, warmth, and security level of a private bank. Guests take one elevator from the ground floor to the lobby, where check-in takes place, and use another set to access their rooms. Given that the hotel hosts many of the city's wealthiest individuals at civic events as well as well-heeled overnight visitors, those security measures are likely to appeal to affluent guests.

Public areas at the Four Seasons San Francisco display a valuable art collection that contains some 80 contemporary pieces. Guests find a brochure in their room identifying and mapping the art works, plus instructions on how to download from iTunes a free audio tour of the collection.

Active guests can use the huge health club conveniently located on the hotel's fourth floor, which includes both a large pool with roped-off lanes for lap swimming and a basketball court.

The Four Seasons San Francisco is located on Market Street, which makes it an ideal location for guests amenable to doing some serious shopping.

The eight-story Westfield Centre shopping mall — where even the food court is a gourmet experience — is a few short blocks away; Bloomingdale's and Nordstrom are its anchors.

Free-standing Emporio Armani and Barneys New York stores are practically across the street, and Union Square's Saks Fifth Avenue and Macy are just up the hill.
