If you're golfers, bring your clubs and take on the challenge of the resort's two highly rated 18-hole courses. Like to shop? The upscale Shops at La Cantera tempt with anchors that include Nordstrom and Neiman Marcus, Macy's and Dillards.
Enjoy the comfort of practiced hands on you? Unwind at the on-site spa.
Traveling with kids? Six Flags Fiesta Texas is literally down the hill (and the hotel provides free shuttle service there and to the mall). The child-averse will appreciate that one of the six pools at the resort is adults-only.
If you visit on a honeymoon or just want some quality romantic time, consider booking one of Westin La Cantera's spacious casitas. You'll get your own golf cart to take you back and forth to the main hotel - if you can convince yourselves to leave that little bit of heaven, which also has a private pool shared by casita guests.
Inspired by Texas' vast King Ranch, Westin La Cantera is a AAA Four-Diamond Property with a strong sense of place. Once a limestone quarry (cantera is Spanish for stone), the property has beautifully intergrated the stone into its landscape. It opened in 1999 and underwent a renovation in 2009.
Inside, the Texas-sized lobby features a genuine Frederic Remington sculpture. Design accents that include blue slate floors, beamed ceilings, heavy wooden doors with wrought-iron touches, and elevator walls covered in hand-tooled leather reminiscent of a finely made saddle all help forge the resort's unique personality. Public rooms are named in honor of famous Texans (there's usually a small plaque that explains the tribute), and the casitas honor various Texas ranches.
