Expect luxury, spaciousness, tropical heat, water views, and a mile of beachfront that edges the jungle beyond at Rosewood Mayakoba, the second upscale enclave in the 1,600-acre Mayakoba development. (Fairmont Mayakoba was the first resort to welcome guests at this new location.)
All 128 rooms at Rosewood Mayakoba have water views, overlooking either the beach or a lagoon. Top room categories are over-water spa and lagoonview suites and oceanview duplexes that look out onto the Caribbean. Private plunge pools and outdoor garden showers add to the sensuality of the setting. The luxury aspect is enhanced with the availability of 24-hour butler and room service as well as concierges and valets on call.
Casa del Lago, the primary restaurant at Rosewood Mayakoba, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It also contains two private wine rooms where oenophiles can savor food-and-wine pairings. Punta Bonita by the beachfront infinity swimming pool is a a casual grill serving Mexican fare; lighter dishes are on the menu at the spa café. The resort also has a raw bar, tequila "library," and cigar bar.
Couples can exchange wedding vows indoors or outside. The Foyer Las Palmas area is an alternative to standing by the sand, while three interior meeting rooms are a smart back-up in case of rain or uncomfortable heat. Another alternative for smaller wedding parties is Avicenia, a private dining room in the main restaurant that can accommodate up to about 16 people. Start the honeymoon in a beachfront suite. These practically touch the ocean and have a private plunge pool and balcony.
Sense spa is located on its own small island at Rosewood Mayakoba, and guests cross a bridge to reach it. The three-hour couples package can include body sense treatments, aromatherapy baths, massages, a private yoga lesson, and facials. Treatments incorporate indigenous ingredients made from local plants such as aloe and agave cactus. What's most unique about the spa is that the design centers around a cenote, a natural limestone pool fed by the subterranean springs. Outdoors the spa also has a meditation platform, herb garden, lap pool and relaxation deck where refreshments are available.
El Camaleon golf course in the development, designed by Greg Norman, offers coastal views. Swimmers can dip in Rosewood Mayakoba's own beachfront, infinity-edge, and spa lap pools as well as the warm Caribbean, where a variety of water sports are available. Snorkeling and diving excursions to the world's second largest reef can be arranged, and the crystal-clear cenotes are a local phenomenon to swim in. The ruins of Tulum can be visited on a day trip. Other pursuits, ranging from cooking classes to horseback riding, can be set up. On site, guests can participate in yoga daily.
Playa del Carmen, four miles away, is the nearest town. To reach Rosewood Mayakoba, visitors fly into Cancun International Airport. Once here, guests get around by foot, resort shuttle, golf cart or boat. The suites, spa, restaurants, beaches, and golf course are accessible by the resort's open-air boats. Rosemont Mayakoba also has a real-estate component; these Rosewood Residences start at $1.5 million US dollars.
