Where to Stay in Providence

By , About.com Guide

A recent trip to Providence confirmed that this is truly a great city to visit and vacation in. Providence attractions — indoors, outdoors, and on the water — seem custom-made for a a romantic couple. If you're planning a trip to Providence, choose one of her most romantic hotels to get the most out of a Rhode Island getaway. (Note: Click on photos to view enlarged images.)

1. Providence Renaissance Hotel

This hotel was conceived as a grand Masonic temple. Neo-Classical in style and poised between the equally dignified state capitol and the heart of downtown Providence, its future was aborted when the Depression descended and construction funds dried up. The shell sat empty for 78 years, yet was listed on the National Register of Historic Places despite the urban decay that plagued it. Thanks to a $100 million dollar investment, the building was transformed in 2004 into an elegant, state-of-the-art property. Today the upscale hotel, with its 272 rooms, trendy Temple Downtown restaurant, funky-goth-intimate lounge, and an entire floor dedicated to weddings, has assumed a prominent spot on the Providence skyline and in the life of the city.

2. NYLO Hotel

Located in Warwick, 15 miles outside Providence, NYLO is one of a new breed of hip boutique hotels, reasonably priced and eco-sensitive. Although the accommodations -- generally under $100 a night -- may remind some of an upscale college dorm room, the gathering place in the lobby is extraordinary. Named The Loft, it's a restaurant-cum-lounge with an ultra-long, undulating bar and decor that creates its own reality, a cross between Pee Wee's Playhouse and the undersea world. Intrigued? Then detour to Warwick to experience the next wave in travel.

3. Hotel Dolce Villa

Part of Providence's Little Italy neighborhood aka Federal Hill, the intimate Hotel Dolce Villa has just 15 all-suite accommodations where white decor predominates. Far from a cookie-cutter property, rooms at this affordable, idiosyncratic place are equipped with a full kitchen complete with an oven and dishwasher. Wi-fi is free, as is popcorn, hot chocolate, and biscotti snacks. Discounts are available at neighboring restaurants.

4. Hotel Providence

A professionally managed downtown hotel with an ideal location, the restored Hotel Providence is located in a part of the city on the National Register of Historic Places. It combines a turn-of-the-century New England flavor with 21st-century Green Certification. Each room features original artwork, sumptuous textiles, and tiger maple wood accents. The hotel perennially earns a Four-Diamond rating from AAA.

5. Providence Biltmore Hotel

Grand dame of the Providence skyline, this member of Historic Hotels of America has kept up with the times thanks to a recent renovation and the addition of an Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa. Like many older hotels, the size of its guest rooms is larger than those in newer properties planned by revenue-management types. But like a fussy dowager afraid the upholstery may get soiled, the hotel does not permit pets on the property.
