The grayness is offset by long, colorful tubular lamps suspended from the ceiling and white bedclothes. Surrounded by a generous number of soft pillows, the cushy sink-in mattress is set on a frame with fake wooden wheels. A fake-fur throw stretches atop it (one hopes all the ersatz does not encourage fake orgasms!).
Room decor reminds this writer of a 21st-century dorm room. Furniture is formed from sandwiched wood and upholstered in brown microfiber material. Plexiglas tables and local artwork complete the style-on-a-budget look. Yet it is clean, comfortable, rates are low, and it works.
Well-equipped rooms feature a desk and ergonomic chair, free wi-fi, a wall-mounted LG flatscreen TV with HBO and in-room movies, and an iHome dock/player/alarm clock for the iPod (this model does not work with the iPhone). There's also a Keurig, the coffeemaker that yours truly remains unable to master despite multiple attempts). Nice touch: Free local and domestic long distance calls.
Instead of a bathtub, the fluorescent-lit shower is big enough for two and has an oversize rainshower spout and a separate handheld unit. Uncommonly, the bathroom mirror extends across the shower wall. There's also a vessel sink and a magnifying makeup mirror.
Environmentally sensitive travelers will be happy to know that NYLO runs on 100% renewable energy. The brick walls and concrete floors help to stabilize indoor temperatures and cut electricity usage for heating and cooling. And the hotel's entire fourth floor houses allergy-averse rooms with purified air and hypoallergenic textiles.
