Rittenhouse 1715 is an upscale bed-and-breakfast that contains eight rooms and two suites inside a renovated 1911 townhouse. Although it has limited facilities, its location on a small side street off tony Rittenhouse Square will appeal to visitors who prefer to lodge in an intimate place in one of the city's best neighborhoods.

Room 211, where we stayed, is on the second floor, reachable by both stairs and elevator. Nicely decorated, with coffee-color walls and complementary furnishings, it has a kingsize bed, gas fireplace, writing desk, and flatscreen Panasonic TV. Wi-fi and a Timex clock radio/CD player with an mp3 input are provided. The modern marble bathroom is equipped with Molton Brown amenities, a magnifying makeup mirror, and a shower big enough for two (the bench is a nice feature), a few thick Frette washcloths and towels, and two bathrobes. The bathroom also has a nightlight, a thoughtful amenity that most hotels skip.
Dining at Rittenhouse 1715:
Continental breakfast is the only meal available at Rittenhouse 1715 and it is served in a bright room in the hotel basement. The spread includes juice, croissants, bagels, banana bread, fruit salad, coffee, and tea. There is no room service. If you get hungry after breakfast, there is a grocery store around the corner and any number of restaurants a few blocks away. If you want to splurge and taste flavors and combinations both savory and sophisticated, make a reservation to eat at Alma de Cuba
nearby, order up some mojitos, and be prepared to experience wonderfully inventive cuisine and superior service.
Honeymoon at Rittenhouse 1715:
Small and quiet, Rittenhouse 1715 has several qualities a couple taking a short getaway might appreciate. It's located on a safe side street perfect for stealing a kiss, provides a comfortable kingsize bed, and two easily can fit in its shower. The hotel invites guests to partake of a complimentary wine tasting in the afternoons — a good opportunity to asked long-married guests the secret of their success. And if there were children around when we visited, they were neither seen nor heard.
Nearby Rittenhouse 1715:
Rittenhouse Square Park, a magnet for friendly people and their irresistible dogs, is only a short block away. Many of Philadelphia's best downtown shops are along nearby Walnut Street. Among the ones we had to visit were Kiehl's for skin, hair, and pet products; Coach for wallets and bags; and Lagos for stylish fine jewelry.
Is Rittenhouse 1715 Right for You?:
If you prefer a full-service hotel, you may find yourselves frustrated by the limitations of Rittenhouse 1715: There's no room service, no safe, no bathtub, no movies on demand, no DVD, no HBO. The concierge doubles as a porter. But if you want a quiet getaway in a sophisticated setting on a lovely street in one of the nicest parts of Philadelphia, you'll be more than satisfied.
- Initially finding Rittenhouse 1715 is a challenge, as it is located on a tiny street between four bigger ones.
- To get a taxi, the front desk needs to make a phone call, or you can walk a few blocks and catch a cab idling in front of one of the neighboring larger hotels.
- Parking is a challenge throughout Philly. Guests at Rittenhouse 1715 are advised to use the parking lot at the nearby Radisson Hotel.
- Construction is taking place across the street from the hotel through 2010. Noise is an issue in some rooms till about 5 pm on weekdays. Call for the status of the building being erected before you book.
