Hotel Monaco Portland in a Nutshell:

Portland’s most colorful hotel inspires couples to think pink: The plush lobby of ten-story Hotel Monaco Portland is painted a bold fuchsia, and it’s a true meeting spot — especially between 5 pm and 6 pm nightly, when the hotel pours complimentary local wine and craft beer.

Humans aren’t the only ones whose thirst is slaked in the grand lobby. Bowls are set for Tim, a handsome golden Labrador retriever who’s the house canine. Actually, Hotel Monaco goes above and beyond in the pet-friendly department: like most Kimpton Hotels, goldfish companions are available through room service.

Accommodations at Hotel Monaco Portland:

Built inside a former department store, Hotel Monaco features wide, well-lit hallways that lead to 221 generously proportioned rooms and suites. The lobby's fanciful décor and unique hospitality carry into rooms where wallpaper stripes and prints on plump couches joyfully co-exist.

We loved that Web access is free and there were two sizes of terry robes hanging in the closet, each with a jungle print: giraffes for statuesque guests, zebra for smaller ones. The animal theme continues beyond those veldt-with-a-belt robes to the cuddly teddy bear positioned on the bed beside colorful throw pillows.

Dining at Hotel Monaco Portland:

The most convenient place to grab a bite is Red Star Tavern & Roast House adjacent to the hotel. If you order room service, it will be prepared there. Pazzo, at sister Hotel Vintage Plaza, serves Italian fare that gets high marks from critics.

We were happy to discover Sushi Sakura (506 SW 6th Avenue; 503-206-8863), half a block away from the hotel entrance. Take a seat, and all kinds of sushi move past you on a conveyor belt. The fish is fresh, delicious, neatly prepared, and very inexpensive. Just don't get carried away and confuse it with the goldfish companions available through room service.

Weddings at Hotel Monaco Portland:

Groups up to 200 guests can be accommodated in one of the hotel's private rooms. At sit-down dinners, the maximum crowd is 130 family members and friends. The Kimpton brand website can help you to get started with planning. It features a form to submit to its special events staff that guides you to describe the type of wedding you imagine.

Activities at Hotel Monaco Portland:

In bike-friendly Portland, the Hotel Monaco keeps eight bikes in reserve that can be loaned out to guests at no charge. The city's waterfront is five blocks away, and you can ride on the esplanade along the Willamette River.

There's also an Aveda hair salon adjacent to the hotel, helpful to brides getting married in the hotel or nearby. Hotel Monaco also maintains an in-house fitness center where each machine has a personal TV monitor. In-room massages, facials, and mani-pedis are available.

Nearby Hotel Monaco Portland:

Centrally located, Hotel Monaco Portland is one block from Pioneer Square (aka Portland's living room) and the Pioneer Place shopping mall (home to the city's Apple Store). Williams-Sonoma is across the street, helpful to couples stocking a new home. The hotel is also close to Macy's, Nordstrom, and the bargain hunters' Nordstrom Rack. Note that Hotel Monaco Portland is located within the city's downtown free-fare district.

What Could Be Improved at Hotel Monaco Portland?:

Rather than supplying complimentary slippers, the hotel hangs rubber-footed socks in the closet to tempt guests to purchase them for $15. We'd rather have the slippers.

Is the Hotel Monaco Portland Right for You?:

The first-rate staff is helpful and welcoming to guests who have both a sense of style and a sense of humor. Important to eco-conscious visitors, Hotel Monaco Portland is Green Seal Certified for environmentally responsible activities. Although children are permitted at Hotel Monaco, we saw more four-footed pets checking in, so consider bringing yours. There are no additional fees or weight limits for canine companions. And they get lots of goodies including a personal welcome and doggie care package. Upsells include dog beds, walking services, on-site pet massages, readings with a pet psychic, and a pet portraitist.
