Kauri Cliffs in a Nutshell:

Just when you think you’ve encountered one million shades of green in New Zealand, come to Kauri Cliffs and find a million more. The view here is king and there’s lots of it. The lush 6,000-acre property spanning forest and farmland lies before emerald Matauri Bay and the glistening Pacific Ocean. The par-72 PGA championship golf course ranks among the world's top 100. Guests are welcome to wander and visit the property’s working farm. And with just 22 suites, space is ample so there are plenty of romantic hideaways.

Guest Rooms at Kauri Cliffs:

Cushy but unfussy light-filled guest suites are contained in 11 cottages that blend into the hypnotic landscape. Set on the fringe of a native forest, they overlook the sapphire sea and golf course and range from 601 to 750 square feet. The muted tones, chaise lounges, rattan armchairs, ottomans, throw pillows and super king-sized bed create an inviting atmosphere. There’s even a balcony, gas fireplace, palatial bathrooms with two vanities, and a gigantic walk-in closet with his and her sections. Cottages are well staggered so they’re not on top of each other. A complimentary mini-bar with domestic beer, sodas, signature chocolates and cookies is bliss.

Dining at Kauri Cliffs:

The dining room contains indoor and al fresco seating overlooking the rolling hills and cliffs spilling into the sea. The three-course dinner menu always changes and jackets are required for men. Guests are given several options per course and the chef is very flexible to accommodate dietary restrictions. Dishes are prepared with local ingredients, especially fresh produce and cheeses. Pre-dinner drinks and delectable hors d'oeuvres are complimentary and served in the lounge amid coffee table books and couches. Also included is a cooked breakfast with dishes such as ricotta hotcakes; there's also a vast buffet.

Destination Weddings at Kauri Cliffs:

Weddings are as diverse as the property itself. The Owner’s Cottage, a 4,200-square-foot house perched at the top of the property with sweeping sea views, is a popular venue, especially by its infinity pool, which can be adorned with orchids and lilies. The chef will make just about anything from lamb to venison to lobster. The main lodge has also been transformed into a destination wedding venue with furniture replaced with banquet tables as guests feast on five-course menus. Couples who prefer a toes-in-the-sand locale can exchange vows at Pink Beach as the waves lap against the shore.

Honeymoons at Kauri Cliffs:

The property offers endless romantic options such as lounging in the Jacuzzi under the stars or indulging in a massage in a special couple’s treatment room with a private outdoor patio. It’s worth the 45-minute trek (or guests can be driven) to majestic Pink Beach on the property. The staff can arrange a private barbecue with grilled seafood, local produce, and New Zealand cheese and wine. Bond while bird watching, fishing, doing a nature walk to the colossal 700 year-old Kauri Tree and share a kiss by the waterfall.

Activities at Kauri Cliffs:

Kauri Cliffs offers a dizzying array of diverse activities from mountain biking to tennis to clay pigeon shooting. The world-class golf course contains dramatic cliffs bolting into the sea and inland holes meandering through forest and farmland. Nectar for links lovers, it draws golfers from around the world. The spa, which is set in a forest and lies before a stream, is a visual feast with floor-to-ceiling views of foliage. Indulge in massages, mud wraps, and facials in treatment rooms containing patios and fireplaces.

Nearby Kauri Cliffs:

Try game fishing (the region is famous for it), snorkel, dive, or kayak. Visit the 37,000-acre Puketi Kauri Forest and discover rare birds and plants that are found no where else in the world. One of the best ways to understand the region is from above. Guests can do that via the lodge’s six-seat helicopter and a custom itinerary can be designed. Don’t miss Ninety Mile Beach in the far North (it’s actually 55 miles long, but still magical.) The vast dunes seem positively desert-like. Thrill seekers can ride an ATV bike across them.

Drawbacks at Kauri Cliffs:

The resort charges for items that should be included. Breakfast, dinner (excluding wine), pre-dinner drinks and hors d'oeuvres, and most items in the mini-bar are complimentary. However sodas during meals are not and can get expensive. Some guests may also find that the dinner menu doesn’t have enough options; the nearest restaurant is a 45-minute drive away.

Is Kauri Cliffs Right for You?:

It’s thrilling to have a 6,000-acre playground with so many things to do. For those of us who prefer to curl up on a balcony with a good book, it’s activity enough to go gaga over the view. Plus, it’s delightful to have all the creature comforts like great wines and a swimming pool in a bucolic setting. But what makes the property so appealing is the friendly, international staff who remember preferred libations, dietary preferences, and make guests feel so at home. Their pride and joy in the property is contagious.
