Guide Review - The Greenwich Hotel in NYC
The hotel's subtle lighting reveals the use of stone and reclaimed wood in hallways. None of the rooms or suites are exactly alike, although all contain top-of-the-line amenities including Philips flatscreen TVs with HBO and ESPN, Bose iPod docking stations, and a Duxiana bed, the most comfortable in the world. Many of the bathrooms have hand-laid mosaic shower floors. Red Flower toiletries are supplied.
The best accommodations in The Greenwich Hotel are the corner suites, the penthouse, and the duplex suites. We were especially impressed by the latter. The huge slanted windows along one wall of the two-story suite evoke a Parisian artist's atelier.
If you'd like to commune with fellow guests, the ground-level Drawing Room features clubby furniture, a fireplace, and an outdoor garden. Sketches by De Niro's father, a noted artist in his own right, decorate the room.
Swimmers and those who favor hot, humid environments can access the lantern-lit basement pool area, where the air is kept a steamy 82 degrees and the water 80 degrees. It's surrounded by a re-assembled 250-year-old Japanese farmhouse.
Although The Greenwich Hotel is open to the public, it has an elite, entre nous attitude that can be intimidating to outsiders. Don't be surprised that big-name celebrities receive better treatment than lesser luminaries.
