The distinct seasons that transform the New England countryside into classic American vistas are wonderfully captured in Backroads of New England, (Voyageur Press, copyright 2004), a photo book by William H. Johnson enlivened with text by Kim Knox Beckius, Abouts Guide to New England.
Exploring the natural beauty of the six New England states Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Maine Backroads of New England takes you on a scenic tour of some of the prettiest routes in each state.
Johnsons well-composed photographs succeed in capturing each season at its peak and the lighting makes pictures worth framing. (The book would also make a lovely New England calendar.) In addition to classic shots such as New England farms and covered bridges set against vivid foliage, there are also unexpected images, like Johnsons Connecticut lily pond that evokes a Monet painting.
Equally illuminating, the knowledgeable Beckius provides historical perspectives that reflect her passion for the area and she points out landmarks that the casual traveler might otherwise overlook.
Useful as a travel guide, Backroads of New England contains maps and directions for exploring the region beyond its strand of highways. Unfortunately, are no lodging, dining, or shopping recommendations, but Beckius New England for Visitors site more than compensates for that by providing a depth of information on those topics.
Even if current plans dont lead you to New England, youll still enjoy taking in the extraordinary vistas and learning more about this unique, historic, and picturesque region in Backroads of New England.
