We had great hopes for scrumptious seafood dinners in New Hampshire, yet were consistently disappointed by the restaurants we chose, including the expensive fare in the main dining room at Wentworth by the Sea.
The room decor is formal, with fine but outdated furniture. What redeems the interior is the original, restored 1902 overhead fresco of cupids blessing diners.
Those diners would be better served by choosing the hotel's less-formal restaurant, Latitudes, for a meal. Giving up on our seafood quest, we walked down to this waterfront bistro and hoped for the best.
One of us ordered the gorgonzola steak salad, an abundant plate of complementary flavors topped with frizzled onions, and the other munched on bite-size Angus burgers served three ways. The menu provides suggestions for complementary wines. Although one we requested wasn't on the menu, the bartender was kind enough to start a bottle.
The best meal at Wentworth by the Sea is breakfast. Order from the main dining room menu, and you can have the hotel's signature lobster hash. Or dabble at the buffet. A chef stands by to whip up an omelet to your taste. If you're not in the mood for eggs, there is a make-it-yourself waffle iron stand. Other buffet choices include cereals, smoked salmon and bagels, even decadently delicious raspberries and whipped cream.
