One of Miami Beach's iconic hotels, the Eden Roc originally opened in 1956. It was designed by Morris Lapidus, whose star rose, then fell as architecture snobs derided his work as kitsch, and ultimately rose even higher. Today Lapidus holds a place in the firmament as an American original and the creator of the colorful and curvaceous Miami Modernist style.

Thanks to a $220 million upgrade funded by new parent company Marriott, the beachfront property earned its expanded name, Eden Roc Renaissance Miami Beach, when its makeover was complete in 2009.

Recent guests have included Latin royalty Andy Garcia, the Gipsy Kings, Gloria Estefan, and Eva Longoria. But it was the greats of yesteryear — Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, Elizabeth Taylor and Mike Todd, Sammy Davis, Jr. and Jerry Lewis, Groucho Marx and Joe diMaggio — who first built the hotel's reputation as the place to stay and play. Check out the mural alongside the 1500° lobby restaurant, which illuminates Eden Roc's star-studded past.
