A hundred yards down the beach from CasaSandra is the Tarpon Club, a thatched-roof bar where the local fishermen drink Sol and play games after a day at sea. You can eat fresh ceviche here, and get advice on fishing trips offered by local guides.
Ask for Hector at the Tours Information shack on the beach or the small palapa roofed bar, Tuch, located a few yards away where he can be found bartending.
A four-hour fishing trip with Hector and Ricardo included a stop at Yalahau, a cold-water spring in the mangrove forest on the mainland.
Up until just 15 years ago, Holbox natives used the spring for drinking water.
A dip in the cold water refreshes you after a couple hours fishing in the sun.
Following the trip, guides serve up ceviche from the fish just caught.
The small town of Holbox is also worth exploring. A few shops and restaurants surrounding the town square offer some diversity from the beachfront spots.
After a few days on the island you will be greeted by locals and fellow vacationers alike - often by name - as you roam the streets, prompting you to contemplate the possibility of staying permanently.
