The Athenaeum is a cosmopolitan, contemporary hotel. Sitting on the couch in the lobby reveals an interesting international mix of businesspeople, families and young couples. It is a most welcoming and alive atmosphere.
Indicative of The Athenaeum’s character is the Thursday evening cocktail party. Held in the Garden Room, all of the hotel’s guests are invited to a late afternoon gathering with wines and finger food.
The night we were there, we met a young couple from Athens, a musician from San Francisco, and an executive of a cosmetic company who lives in the town next to ours on Long Island.
The latter has been returning to The Athenaeum with his wife for twenty years, and while he misses some of the old British style that disappeared with the renovation, he finds that the welcoming attitude of the hotel hasn’t changed one bit and appreciates the addition of modern touches, such as larger rooms.
