Hampton Inns and Hampton Inn & Suites Hotels

What are Hampton Inns?:

Hampton Inns and Hampton Inn & Suites are Hilton Hotels' mid-priced line of more than 1,300 hotels located in 49 of the United States as well as in Canada and and Latin America. Many Hampton Inns are located nearby a highway for the convenience of drivers and provide free parking space near the room, so those qualify as motels in my book.

Facilities in Hampton Inns:

Hampton Inns, while not the cheapest motels around, pile on the freebies. There's free breakfast, free wi-fi in the lobby (and your room, if it's close enough) or high-speed Internet access at your desk. Free coffee is available in the lobby around the clock (and there always seem to be chocolate-chip cookies at the front desk). In addition, local calls are free, there's a free in-room movie channel, and there's no charge for USA Today.

What are Guest Rooms Like in Hampton Inns?:

In my experience, they are clean, plain, and a good size for the cost, They are designed with a traveling salesman in mind. In addition to the bed, there is a desk and chair, a TV and dresser, and an armoire to hang clothing. Strangely, each time I've stayed in a Hampton Inn, I've noticed the room smells of hair tonic; perhaps it's the cleaning solution the maids use. Bathrooms are spare and simple (no makeup mirror), and cheap amenities (soap, shampoo, etc.) are provided.

Sleeping in Hampton Inns:

Hampton Inns aren't the kind of place you normally go on vacation; they're more of a rest stop en route to a destination. Yet you're likely to get a good night's sleep: The brand recently introduced a Cloud Nine bedding package that copies the look of more upscale brands. Gone are the awful quilted bedspreads, replaced by a white duvet cover. Pillows offer guests a choice of firmness, and there's also a lumbar pillow and lap desk for those who like to read or work in bed.

Meals in Hampton Inns:

Breakfast is included in the room rate at Hampton Inns and Hampton Inns and Suites. A portion of the lobby is given over to morning food service, and guests serve themselves. Fruit, yogurt, cereal, bread, muffins, coffee and tea are all available along with Hampton Inns' On the House™ hot breakfast offerings. Monday through Friday, properties provide On the Run Breakfast Bags for guests who don't have time to sit and eat. No other meals are available at these properties.

What Else Should You Know About Hampton Inns?:

Hampton Inn stays earn guests points in the HiltonHonors frequent traveler program (membership required). Some properties permit pets, and a few of the hotels have an onsite swimming pool (check beforehand). The brand has recently introduced Hidden Landmarks, a site that helps travelers identify uncommon points of interest. Hampton Inn Suites typically offer the choice of an individual room or a suite with a separate bedroom, sleep sofa, whirlpool, and fully equipped kitchen.

How Could Hampton Inns Be Improved?:

Rooms could have a more pleasant smell and provide magnifying makeup mirrors to accommodate female guests. Online, the Hampton Inns' eDirectory of properties is not compatible with Macintosh computers. If it were a PDF file, it would be accessible to all Web site visitors.

Are Hampton Inns for You?:

If you need a convenient place to stay for a night, a Hampton Inn is likely to suit your purposes. These properties are not full-service hotels or romantic in the least, so they would not be appropriate for an extended stay.
