Susan Breslow Sardone: When and where did the wedding take place?
Diane von Furstenberg: February 2, 2001 at New York's City Hall. I had arranged a birthday party for him and my children, who are all Aquarians. Instead, we got married. I ran out of excuses. It was just us and my children.
SBS (having a Joan Rivers moment): Tell me about the ring.
DVF: It has 26 little diamonds...commemorating the 26 years I wasn't married!
SBS: This is your second marriage, correct?
DVF: On my first honeymoon, when I was pregnant, we [Diane and Prince Egon von Furstenberg] took a cruise to Norway because we thought it would be cool. But everyone on the boat was an average age of 75...so it was really boring.
SBS: What's important to consider when planning a honeymoon?
DVF: Go to a place where you're not going to be stressed, because a honeymoon itself can be a stressful thing. But the wonderful thing about a honeymoon is traveling with someone you love who you can share experiences with. Just don't go to a place where everything is too expensive...it'll put your husband in a bad mood.
SBS: Any other advice?
DVF: Go for what you want to do. Attitude is everything. And the honeymoon is just the beginning of your life together. it should be fun, and light, and a time for intimacy.
"I design for the woman who loves being a woman." -- DVF
DVF: It really depends. I travel in so many different ways; I travel high, I rough it...it all depends on who I travel with.
SBS: Okay. Then what's the most historically interesting place you've been to?
DVF: I love Istanbul. It's so exotic and mysterious. If you like sightseeing and doing your own thing, I recommend it. I like to stay in a very old hotel. Although it's falling apart, it makes me feel as if I'm in an Agatha Christie book or a spy thriller.
SBS: What about adventure travel?
DVF: If you like trekking, go to the Himalayas or Peru. I love those kinds of trips. But it all depends on your own life and what you like and what you expect. Some people want to have a luxurious honeymoon because daily life is not that easy. Others, who may have a big, luxurious, comfortable apartment, may prefer something much rougher and harder for a change.
SBS: Which exotic, luxurious destinations would you recommend for a honeymoon?
DVF: Bali and the Aman resorts are all very luxurious, great places to go.
SBS: Which European countries are best for couples?
DVF: I love Italy. Everyone thinks of Venice, which is extraordinary. Venice is definitely up there. Totally unique and divine. But totally expensive. There's also Capri and Positano, which have been honeymoon places since antiquity, and there's a reason for that. Sicily is also quite beautiful.
Ireland is also quite nice. So is Amsterdam. The important thing is to take your time and not get stressed.
My son loves the Hotel du Cap, in the south of France.
SBS: What if you've married someone who likes to travel on his stomach? Which country satisfies gourmands?
DVF: Italy will always have the best food.
SBS: Some honeymooners insist on warm weather and a beach. Where then?
DVF: Harbour Island in the Bahamas is beautiful, with turquoise water and pink sand.
SBS: And if you need to chill out?
DVF: St. Petersburg is a great place to go.
SBS: Any advice for those packing for a honeymoon or a romantic getaway?
DVF: My clothes are great for a honeymoon: They're light and sexy, colorful and pretty, and not expensive.
SBS: Do you yourself pack a lot or a little when you travel?
DVF: I travel light. I think the most important thing is to be in a good mood and enjoy life, wherever you are.
