What to Expect at The Atlantic Hotel:
As the area’s first luxury hotel on the beach, opened in 2004, the Atlantic Hotel gets credit for Fort Lauderdale’s renaissance. The Atlantic’s decor is a sophisticated blend of earth-toned marble and wood set off with eye-popping blue accents: blue light fixtures, blue vases, planters, and bowls. The Atlantic Hotel is family-owned and has achieved the AAA 4-Diamond rating. Although its 124 rooms (almost all face the water) make it a bit large to be called a boutique hotel, it has a warm ambiance associated with smaller properties.
Guest Rooms at The Atlantic Hotel:
The earthy tones and blue color scheme of the Atlantic is harmoniously repeated in crisp white guest rooms where the blue elements are in the pattern on the carpet and a throw on the bed, and, looking outside from the balcony, the blue swimming pool, the blue of the sky, and blue ocean. The look is soothing and sophisticated. There is a full, well-equipped kitchenette in every room and a flat screen TV. Our standard bedroom was so large it felt like a suite.
Dining at The Atlantic Hotel:
Trina, the Atlantic Hotel’s restaurant, has earned accolades for both its location — as the top restaurant with an ocean view in the area — and its cuisine. Trina’s bouillabaisse and lobster and scallop risotto (actually orzo) outstripped other top Fort Lauderdale hotels in culinary competitions. We ordered both and agreed with the assessments. Interestingly flavored house-made ice creams and sorbets topped off the meal. We tried pumpkin and cinnamon ice creams and passion fruit and smoked raspberry sorbets.
Spa at The Atlantic Hotel:
It’s not necessary to sign up for a treatment to enjoy The Atlantic Hotel’s spa. The sauna, steam room, and whirlpool are available to guests, gratis. That said, the Atlantic Spa has put together a collection of intriguing treatments, with some that are especially created for couples. The Journey of the Spirits group (Oriental, Mediterranean, Indian, and Arabian) offer up to four-and-a-half hours of baths, scrubs, wraps, massages, and facials. The swimming pool and a gym where treadmills face the sky and the water are next to the spa.
Destination Weddings at The Atlantic Hotel:
The Atlantic Hotel is a popular spot for destination weddings. Those are held either on the beach across from the hotel (couples wanting a wedding on the beach need to get a permit directly from city hall), the ocean terrace by the pool, or the penthouse. The Atlantic Hotel can accommodate parties of up to 150 people.
Honeymoons/Romance at The Atlantic Hotel:
The bed and breakfast package includes an upgrade to a grande deluxe oceanfront room with a large private balcony and a full American breakfast for two. The Atlantic Spa also offers several treatments for couples, including an in-room massage for two.
Nearby The Atlantic Hotel:
An interesting way to experience Fort Lauderdale is via the Water Taxi, a fleet of smallish crafts not unlike the boats that tour around little lakes in amusement parks. And the taxi is more like a fun ride that an ordinary means of transportation. Fort Lauderdale’s Water Taxi, which runs nearly every half hour, plies through the city’s canals, making 14 stops in all. Taxi captains chatter about the homes and yachts owned by the rich and anonymous (wealth here is more from business than entertainment). A ticket on the Water Taxi allows unlimited stops for a day.
What Could Be Better at The Atlantic Hotel?:
Cell phone service is awful. It is necessary to go to the south side of the hotel in order to make a connection and even that is not always clear. On a positive note, there is free wi-fi in guest rooms and access to the Internet in the business center using PCs.
Is The Atlantic Hotel Right for You?:
This is a soothing and relaxing environment. We loved watching sunrise from our room as the counterpoint to the spectacular orange and yellow sunset of the night before. Morning brought the subtle arrival of light, with us barely able to make out the dark lines of the waves rolling in — and then the brilliant sun finally appeared.
