Inn on Fifth in Naples, Florida

Inn on Fifth in a Nutshell:

A small, romantic hotel, the Inn on Fifth is located on palm-tree-lined Fifth Avenue in downtown Old Naples. Its exterior is reminiscent of the Mediterranean-inspired, 1920s style of Palm Beach architecture identified with Addison Mizner. The grounds contain fountains, courtyards, and gardens. A lovely formal lobby, friendly staff, and complimentary parking valet all make for a warm welcome. The hotel is surrounded by shops, art galleries, and restaurants and is a five-block walk from the beach at the Gulf of Mexico.

Guest Rooms at Inn on Fifth :

The Inn on Fifth contains 87 guest rooms. Our terrace suite, which had a sitting area and separate work space, featured a burgundy carpet and walls of a soothing pale yellow shade. High ceilings gave the suite an even more spacious feel. The deep jetted bathtub and separate glassed-in shower are also oversize. Amenities are by Gilchrist & Soames. Some rooms have Fifth Avenue terraces that open to a landing overlooking the street below. Free wi-fi is available throughout the hotel.

Dining at Inn on Fifth :

With many restaurants close to the hotel, there's no need to settle for the raucous McCabe's Irish Pub, which is located on the first floor, unless a couple wants to tie one on. Although it serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, the food leaves much to be desired. Feel like splurging? Truluck's, in the rear of the building, specializes in steaks and seafood and offers a choice of more than 100 wines by the glass. Filet Oscar -- steak with crabmeat and Bernaise sauce -- is one rich and tasty specialty.

Weddings at Inn on Fifth:

The hotel can host up to 120 wedding guests inside and up to 200 outside at the poolside courtyard. But beware of summertime heat and afternoon showers if you select the latter.

Popular for second marriages, the hotel has at times been completely booked with wedding guests, which can make for a weekend extravaganza. Couples work with outside vendors, although catering is available. The bridal party and guests can relax at the spa in small numbers. The hotel offers honeymooners and others a romance package that includes a couples spa massage and champagne and chocolates in the room upon arrival.

Spa at Inn on Fifth:

Located on the hotel's third floor, the spa has a steam room, sauna, and four treatment rooms, including a larger one for share-with-a-partner services. Treatments include facials, massages, and body wraps. After undergoing a candlelight couples massage where lavender oil and lemongrass oil were used to loosen up muscles for deeper penetration, the female half of a couple noted, "It's nicer than the Ritz."

Swimming at Inn on Fifth:

To relax and cool off, guests at the Inn on Fifth can listen to the sounds of the waterfall into the three-and-one-half-feet deep pool. An even shallower part of the pool allows users to sit in the water and bask in the Florida sunshine. As there is no gift shop to buy sunscreen, magazines, or a hat, come prepared. The pool area has self-serve towels and a water fountain. Waiter service is sporadic.

Nearby Inn on Fifth:

Couples come to Naples to shop, golf, dine, or stroll the palm-tree-lined streets to the beach. There is a trolley that runs through Old Naples, also known as downtown. The most upscale shopping area is along Third Street South. There's even a concierge kiosk, which offers help with directions and transportation. Buyers can find everything from Chihuly glass to Chloe accessories along this way. And the iconic vivid prints by Lilly Pulitzer are available at at the C. Orrico shop. Down at Tin City, a former oyster processing area, visitors can charter a fishing boat or board a daytime or sunset cruise.

What Could be Improved at Inn on Fifth?:

The Inn on Fifth definitely has its charms and complaints are minor. That said, couples who stay at newer boutique hotels may find amenities here lacking. For example, there's a non-digital in-room safe requiring a key to open, and an ancient coffee maker. Rooms have an old clock radio and no DVD, CD, or iPod player. The bathroom's standard towels could be plusher and larger (we love bathsheets). And the dimly lit vanity space needs a magnifying mirror; evening makeup application is a challenge. In addition, room service deliveries can be a bit slow and careless. Last, there is no evening turndown service.

Is the Inn on Fifth Right for You? :

The Inn on Fifth is a hotel, not a resort. Which means that you shouldn't expect things like tennis courts and golf courses steps from your room. What you can expect is the town at your door (although summer heat and humidity may discourage some from leaving their air-conditioned quarters). If you must be directly on the beach and would mind walking the five blocks to the sandy shore, the Inn on Fifth is not for you. But if you enjoy having a private, undisturbed stay in a traditional hotel amidst an upscale resort town, you are likely to savor your visit.
