These days, inspired travelers plan on visiting both Uruguay and its neighbor Argentina on their honeymoons.
The countries’ common border is the South Atlantic-facing Rio de la Plata river. It’s easy to hop a ferry from Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, to Uruguay’s historic jewel box town, Colonia del Sacramento.
For those torn between two types of honeymoons, Uruguay and Argentina present intriguingly complementary tourism experiences. Enormous Argentina is largely a modern urban culture, with far-flung countryside and wine regions. Uruguay has its own intoxicating flavor: it is also a sophisticated First World country, yet it is primarily rural and agricultural.
Uruguayans like to say that the country’s cows outnumber its people. Drive half an hour from the dignified capital, Montevideo, and you are in farmland and wine country. Another couple of hours on the road lands you in one of the world’s legendary jet-set beach playgrounds, Punta del Este.
In fact, all of compact Uruguay can be seen during road trips, a favorite honeymoons activity.
