Ecuador presents a ready-made romantic getaway for adventurers. Since it is not yet an established tourism destination, the country offers authentic pleasures along with the occasional hardship.

Ecuador honeymoons are recommended for couples who:

  • Take pride in discovering a destination way before the hordes do
  • Maintain a sense of adventure about people, cities, attractions, hotels, restaurants, and transportation
  • Are looking for a relatively close-by destination with little or no jetlag
  • Have a tight budget
  • Have the Galapagos on their wish list of places to see
  • Enjoy photography (Ecuador’s old cities and green highlands are magnificent)
  • Are willing to learn enough Spanish to buy a bottle of water or take a taxi
  • Are careful to take precautions with purses, wallets, and cameras
Ecuador honeymoons are not advisable for couples who:
  • Demand First World luxury, European punctuality, and/or Buenos Aires-level Latin sophistication
  • Want to stay in one city (an Ecuador visit should touch on several locales)
  • Are serious oenophiles (Ecuadorans are not wine drinkers)
  • Are prone to altitude sickness (Cuenca, Quito, and other worthwhile sites are high in the Andes)
  • Have sensitive lungs (auto and bus pollution are unavoidable in Ecuadoran cities)
  • Would rather collect Italian shoes in Rome or French bags in Paris than Panama hats in Ecuador.
