It’s easy to observe butterflies in the various butterfly houses throughout the country.

An orchid grove is a five-minute drive from El Silencio. The lodge arranges for a visit with the owner, don Martin, to see the more than 400 species of orchids that grow here. (There are more than 1,500 species in Costa Rica, and many can be seen along trails through the forests and fields.)

We stopped at the nearby butterfly house on our way to Hacienda Pozo Azul. There are many butterfly houses throughout the country (five percent of the world’s butterflies are native to Costa Rica) where visitors can see the process from cocoon to full-fledged butterfly.

A total delight was holding the beautiful cocoon of the monarch butterfly, which could have passed for a gold flecked jade pendant, until it started moving in my hand.
