Karen Loftus Bio

Atop The Remarkables, the southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand.

Background:

Award-winning playwright, Tennessee Williams Fellow, and international comedian Karen Loftus has traveled through the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, entertaining expats, execs, US troops and theater savvy audiences. Then she took a break from comedy and touring, putting on the page what she once delivered onstage. As a journalist, Karen found her niche writing about travel, fashion, and culinary and cocktail tourism. It was a coming home as her Irish grandparents ran a speakeasy and distilled their own spirits. This fashion-forward foodie has parasailed, bungee jumped, and canyoneered, all in search of the story.

Publications:

Loftus reports on her world travels in a mad mix of outlets, contributing to several regional, domestic and international magazines, numerous websites, in trades and papers around the world. She covers food, fashion, cocktails, posh golf, wine, hotels, beauty, spas and of course travel.

Magazine Work:

Karen’s written for Zink Magazine, Arizona Foothills, Item, Wedding Vow, 944, Curve, Six Degrees, Food & Beverage, Beverage Industry News, Patterson’s, La Opinion, German World and several international outlets, The Gulf News (the daily paper of The Middle East based in Dubai) Grazia (UK) New Woman (Australia) Lucire (New Zealand) and travel trade outlets Travel Age West & Travel Mole.

Radio, TV, More:

She is a regular correspondent on Next Trip Radio talking about travel trends and undiscovered wonders. She is a guest on international TV, recently on Good Morning New Zealand (comparable to Good Morning America) and news shows tracking trends, talking fashion and travel. She has two travel vlogs A Lofty Life and Notes from the Road on Kyte TV and is in development for her own radio and traveling spirits (relating to alcohol, not ghosts ) based TV show.

Drama, Comedy, Performance:

Karen's plays It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s Man’s World, Barbie's Dolls and I’m Not The Blonde You Think I Am have been produced and performed at theaters and festivals around the world. Her solo comedy show, "American Woman, A One Woman Comedic Invasion," premiered in Singapore at The Singapore Comedy Festival. She returned several times to Singapore with the show in between her many global engagements. The American Woman show was all about her global travels. She is currently writing the book based on her comedic travels and on the American Woman tour.

On Travel :

Karen is most at home when she is away from it. Accents are her favored aphrodisiac and travel is her drug of choice.

Education:

Karen earned her BS at University of Maryland where she studied marketing. She has since studied with top acting, comedy and writing teachers in LA, NY & London. She’s also studied at The Groundlings, Second City, Improv Olympic and with Cirque du Soleil’s premier clown David Shiner and with Philippe Gaulier of Le Coq, the top clown teacher in the world. Karen loves to learn. Travel is her greatest teacher to date as it offers endless lessons.

Teaching:

Karen has served as an artist in residence at many universities and has conducted comedy and writing workshops for theater and college students, business execs and in the non-profit sector in prisons and shelters.
