Grand Hyatt Shanghai in a Nutshell :
By virtue of inhabiting the top 34 floors of the Jin Mao Tower, the tallest building in mainland China and the fourth tallest building in the world, the Grand Hyatt Shanghai holds the auspicious title of highest hotel in the world. At least for now; new skyscrapers continuously compete for views in the hotel’s neighborhood, Pudong, Shanghai’s booming business district across the Huangpo river from city center. The Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the bulbous mascot of Shanghai’s skyline and a popular tourist attraction, is just a few blocks away from the hotel.
Guest Rooms at Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
The view was the dominating feature of my Club Level room. Half the walls were floor-to-ceiling glass panels separated by the cross-hatched steel girders, which make the Jin Mao Tower’s architecture so recognizable. Contrasting the modern aesthetic are classic touches such as a Ming-style wedding cabinet housing the TV.
Dining at Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
Of the seven restaurants in the hotel, four stand out. The spacious Canton, which covers the entire 55th floor, offers haute Cantonese cuisine in a traditional Chinese layout—meaning there are several private rooms for which local tycoons compete. The 56th floor features three distinctive venues: Cucina serves pastas and pizzas; sushi and fresh seafood abound at Kobachi; and The Grill whets American appetites with various beef and rotisserie dishes. The restaurants are large and circular, so it can sometimes be difficult to find your waiter, all of whom speak English. But once you do, service is prompt.
Destination Weddings at Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
The Grand Hyatt Shanghai often hosts weddings in its banquet rooms. Packages, which require a minimum of 100 guests, include cocktails, either a Western or Chinese menu, a cake, a centerpiece, and several post-ceremony perks for the happy couple.
Honeymoons/Romance Packages at Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
The Amour Rise Refreshed package allows couples to linger in bed by having breakfast delivered at their leisure and by checking out as late as 3pm. You won’t need any sort of package, though, to snuggle with your honey in a cozy booth at Cloud 9, the hotel’s top-floor bar that boasts to be, you guessed it, the highest bar in the world. Go even higher in the slightly more private 87th-and-a-half floor, where short ceilings create an even more intimate vibe.
Activities at Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
Club Oasis, on the 57th floor, features an indoor swimming pool, 24-hour gym, and barber shop. Although the spa’s treatment rooms are not co-ed—and neither are the sauna, steam room, or Jacuzzi—couples can receive treatments some basic treatments together in their room, by request. Classic Chinese foot massage can be intense and even occasionally painful, but you’ll find it invigorating for the night to come. (You can also ask your therapist to take it easy on a tender Westerner.)
Nearby Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
Excluding the Oriental Pearl TV Tower, there isn’t much sightseeing in the decidedly financial area of Pudong. Honeymooners will have to take a taxi through the connecting tunnel under the Huangpo for exploring, shopping, and dining needs. Although taxis are cheap, traffic in Shanghai can be maddening; expect any trip across the river to take at least 20 minutes.
What Could be Improved at Grand Hyatt Shanghai :
Rooms surround a stunning open atrium that spans most of the hotel’s 30-plus floors. Although gorgeous, the circular layout was a bit confusing; I often got lost while walking around. My only other beef with the hotel is something far out of its control—unless a wind is blowing through, Shanghai’s thick pollution frustrates views, which are the main draw to the property.
Is the Grand Hyatt Shanghai Right for You? :
The Grand Hyatt Shanghai has won dozens of awards, many of which are in the business-hotel category, which is the biggest indicator of the property’s dominant patronage. That is not to say, however, that there aren’t other experiences to be had. I spied several couples canoodling in Cloud 9 and by the pool. Besides, after tying the knot, you’ll probably feel on top of the world, so why not sleep there, too?
