The Horizon Hotel recaptures the feeling of the 1950s, when Hollywood celebrities and throngs of other Angelenos began flocking to Palm Springs to lie by a pool and bake in the hot desert sun.
Two hours' drive from Los Angeles, the resort was originally built in 1952 by a Hollywood mogul and his movie actress wife, who stayed in the main house while inviting friends such as Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, and Rosalind Russell to stay in the guest rooms.
After a two-year renovation, the Horizon Hotel reopened in May 2006, recreating the retro glamour of the period in which it was first built.
The one-story white buildings that comprise this quiet, secluded desert retreat frame a swimming pool and outdoor bar. The 2.5-acre propertys velvety green lawns, palm trees, and desert flowers and plants are well-tended, and the entire property affords a spectacular view of the San Jacinto Mountains.
The décor of the 22 guest rooms incorporates clean lines and a black-and-white color scheme that gives them a sophisticated ambience. The original architect used no 90-degree angles only 102 and 78 degree angles which creates a distinctive look in all the interiors. The pool also has an unusual, angular shape.
Described by the manager as just a place to relax, the hotel has a hot tub, an outdoor bar, and a badminton net in addition to the swimming pool. There is no restaurant on site, but continental breakfast is included and delivery from the restaurant next door can be arranged.
Guests must be 21 and up.
