If your fantasy involves sailing away to a private island in the Caribbean where you can swim, sun, snorkel, and scuba dive without being surrounded by crowds of people, Scrub Island Resort may be right for you.

It's the first new resort in the British Virgin Islands in 20 years. The condo-hotel, which opened in 2010, occupies 6 acres of the 230-acre island. Population: 11. Ringed by beaches, it's reachable by helicopter or boat. A 60-slip marina welcomes sailors in the British Virgin Islands, known as the sailing capital of the Caribbean.

The resort contains 52 units; half are one-bedroom suites. All the lodgings face the water and have a balcony. The larger ones feature a terrace.

Suites are equipped with a full kitchen. But don't expect to do a lot of cooking. Scrub Island has two restaurants, Carabella (a steakhouse) and Tierra (casual dining). On Monday nights the hotel hosts a Caribbean buffet and on Tuesday the chef presents a wine-pairing dinner. A meal plan is available.

Prefer to eat a deux? Scrub Island can cater a meal on any of three beaches, beside the swimming pool, or on your suite's terrace. "Caribbean Delight" is a special treat: a local chef comes into your suite and whips up jerk chicken and tropical fish dish. Local culinary treasure, chef Davide Pugliese creates unique meals in his kitchen on Scrub Island. Plus there are several restaurants on the nearby island of Tobago.

The resort has an infinity pool with a waterfall, waterslide and swim-up bar. Still, you'll find it hard to resist the warm Caribbean Sea, gentle and shallow by the coast line. Glass-bottomed kayaks make it possible to snorkel without even getting wet. But this is really the place to go diving; a plethora of undersea wrecks make the deep fascinating.

Thinking of marrying in the BVI? A three-day residency is required. Weddings by the beach and marina make for lovely photo backdrops; venues can accommodate up to 120 guests. Scrub Island Resort also has a 20-seat private dining area with a terrace off Carabella to celebrate in.

And there's a special place for lovers: Called Honeymoon Island, it's a spit of land you must reserve. Someone from Scrub Island will sail you over there and leave a gourmet basket of food and beverages. Then it's just the sun, the sea, the sky, and no one else on the island but the two of you.

Connecting service is available from there.
