A small number of inns, cottages, villas, and resort hotels are located on Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands. Here no building is permitted to rise taller than the surrounding palm trees, which has kept Virgin Gorda development to a manageable, human scale.

Discover the area's most peaceful and pampering hideaways, which have the greatest number of facilities, yet remain in harmony with the environment:

Biras Creek Resort (check rates now) - Relais & Chateaux member located on a 140-acre Virgin Gorda peninsula that's also a nature preserve on the North Sound. Its dining room, bar, reception area, and patio are built in concentric circles, allowing for fabulous views in every direction. Many suites are just steps from the water's edge. All feature a living room and bedroom done in soft Caribbean shades and highlighting locally designed textiles and art. The Sailaway Package includes two nights on a private yacht.

Little Dix Bay Hotel (check rates now) - tucked away on a beautiful crescent of Virgin Gorda beach, Little Dix Bay is surrounded by 500 acres of wilderness. Spectacular beaches, great food, tennis, water sports, and more keep vacationers returning year after year to Virgin Gorda. Custom furnishings, stone walls, and Caribbean prints make each guest area a delight to the eye. Dine by candlelight in the open-air pavilion for ultimate romance. Exchange or renew vows at Point Bougainvillea; turnkey wedding ceremony packages are available.

Bitter End Yacht Club (check rates now) - once the last stop for sailors before heading across the Atlantic, Bitter End is still only accessible by boat. It now plays host to many families and offers Virgin Gorda's best instruction at the Nick Trotter Sailing School. Its 89 accommodations range from beachfront villas and North Sound suites to live-aboard yachts. All are furnished with treasures from around the world.

Nail Bay - (visit website) This 147-acre resort, which stands on the site of a former Virgin Gorda sugar plantation, is made up of exquisite million-dollar beachfront and hillside villas featuring private swimming pools.

Each villa is architecturally distinctive. Mystic Water, for instance, has a series of waterfalls that run through it, flowing from the outside of the structure to the inside and then back out again. The two-bedroom Island Spice villa provides 180-degree views from its hillside setting.

Multiple bedrooms and luxury kitchens, for those who ordinarily don't have time to cook gourmet meals, make Nail Bay an ideal place for couples who want to share a villa with friends or family without sacrificing privacy. High-end amenities, such as Viking gas ranges and wine coolers, are supplied. Fresh herbs, ready for picking, grow in the garden. Executive chef services are available for those who prefer not to cook. Another savory alternative, Nail Bay's Dog and Dolphin bar/restaurant serves gently seasoned West Indian fare, including flying fish, conch, and lobster.
