Best New Hotels for Romance 2013

New Hotels for Couples in Love

Are you the type of couple who loves to be first with the best? Some of these places have recently opened, others will soon. All await your discovery. And whether you prefer sophisticated city hotels or romantic places in the sun, these new hotels and resorts are ones to fall in love with in 2013.

Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Dorado Beach, Puerto Rico

Ritz-Carlton Hotels.
This exclusive getaway is just 35 minutes from San Juan Airport but a world apart. A new offshoot of the Ritz-Carlton brand, Reserves are set in extraordinary places. Here the much-loved but woefully outdated Hyatt Dorado Beach resort once stood. Ritz-Carlton came in and leveled it for a $342-million rebuild that kept the same close-to-the-ocean footprint and opened in December 2012. All accommodations now are set directly on the beach. And the restaurant, designed to optimize sunset views, is steps from the water's edge. Sounds like it was just made for barefoot romance.

Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace, USA

Caesars Palace.
Since the Rat Pack days, Caesars Palace has been the coolest place to stay in Vegas, and it hasn't rested on its laurels (not even those that wreath its myriad Roman statues). Caesars still attracts the biggest superstars, has the sexiest spa, and maintains a water wonderland in the desert. And now it has Nobu, a hotel-within-the-hotel from famed Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa. In contrast to the excitement of the casino, Nobu Hotel is a zenlike space to unwind — and guests have access to Caesars' amenities. Adjacent to the chef's namesake hotel will be Nobu Restaurant and Lounge. So if you've got a craving for a California roll in the wee hours — or even breakfast — just roll out of bed and enjoy. Nobu Hotel officially opens February 2013.

W Paris-Opera, France

Opened on Valentine's Day in 2012, the W Paris-Opera has one of the most desirable locations in Paris for couples who love to walk and window-shop. The hotel stands across from the magnificent Garnier Opéra House and many of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling views of this icon. Paris' top department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Printemps, are nearby. The Louvre is also within walking distance. Modernized within a landmarked Haussmann building, W Paris-Opera contains 91 intimate rooms. Decor is light and modern and the staff wins continuous kudos for caring service. The hotel restaurant serves Spanish tapas; those who crave French cuisine will find plenty beyond the front door.

Tantalo Hotel, Panama

Brian Spencer.
The buzz is all about Panama lately, and the artsy new Tantalo boutique hotel, which opened in March 2012, may be the buzziest place in Panama City. It's also a restaurant, an exhibition space, a performance space, and the place to kick back on a rooftop with a cocktail and take in the views. Tantalo is located in the heart of Casco Viejo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 and one of the most historic, densely packed areas of Spanish colonial architecture left in Latin America. Prefer a hotel that's less urban? Consider the Westin Playa Bonita Panama, which also opened in 2012.

Marti Istanbul Hotel, Turkey

Marti Group.
There's a reason Istanbul is on so many couples' bucket list. The sight of minarets piercing the blue sky, the intoxicating scents of the spice market, the sound of the muezzin's call to prayer, the flavors of fresh, healthy fare create a backdrop that enhances romance. The city certainly has a wealth of exceptional hotels, and the Marti joined them in July. It's located in the Taksim district, where modern Turkey thrives in restaurants, shops, and clubs. Filled with contemporary Turkish art, Marti Istanbul Hotel adds two eateries to the city and a spa with four authentic hammams to work up a sweat. Afterwards, repair to a room decorated in cool, soothing tones and furnished with modern amenities.

Alpina Gstaad, Switzerland

Alpina Gstaad.
It's not often that a new hotel opens in the Alps. The December 2012 launch of this $337-million, 56-room hotel marked the arrival of the first new place in Gstaad, Switzerland in a century. Facilities here that will appeal to affluent couples include a large Six Senses Spa with a hammam and flotation room, two swimming pools, a movie theater, wine room, three restaurants, and a cigar lounge. Built with local salvaged wood and limestone, Alpina Gstaad is in the style of nearby chalets. Come in the winter for the skiing, the summer for the hiking, or any time of year for the gorgeous mountain views and pure air.

Conrad Algarve, Portugal

Hilton Hotels.
Portugal made several 2012 Hot Lists as the go-to place of the year. On its southern coast, the Algarve has been long known by Europeans as the place to soak up the sun and feast on the sea's bounty. In September, the Hilton Hotels Corporation debuted its Conrad Algarve, which has an infinity pool and access to both a lake and a white-sand beach that stretches for nearly two miles. Yet couples may find the large, sexy showers here the most fun they have together in water. Year-round outdoor sports include hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, tennis, sailing, and golf.

Andaz Amsterdam, Netherlands

Hyatt Hotels.
Thanks to its beautiful canals, unique architecture, and world-class art museums (Rembrandt and Van Gogh!), Amsterdam has always drawn couples, even those who weren't lured by its legal red-light district and profusion of coffee shops where marijuana and hashish are sold openly. Since October 2012, there's been something new to intoxicate adults: Andaz Amsterdam. Built on the site of the city's former Public Library, this hotel has a passion for contemporary art. It boasts a 40-piece video art collection that can be accessed via a video channel on your in-room TV. Lovers are still likely to spend more time looking at each other than at what's on screen (save that for when you're married).

To reach the resort, couples board its houseboat for a 15-minute ferry ride from a private jetty. Four Seasons Toronto, Canada

Four Seasons.
The Four Seasons has always called Toronto home. Yet the flagship hotel of the luxe hotel brand had become outdated. In October 2012, this new 55-story structure opened, featuring an exceptional collection of paintings, ceramics, and sculptures by Canadian artists. Warm refuge from winter is found inside the 30,000 square-foot spa, the biggest in the city. It contains several suites just for couples. And if you love fine food as much as each other, be sure to reserve a table at Café Boulud, reached via a floating marble staircase from the lobby.
