Cambridge Beaches in a Nutshell:
Cambridge Beaches is a secluded hideaway on 30 manicured acres that include five-acre Sea View Nature Preserve. Pink cottages dot a lush peninsula edged by pink-sand beaches. The resort has a subdued ambience that emphasizes relaxation and renewal. The oldest resort on Bermuda, it has a high return rate. Names of people who have returned up to 88 times cover an entire wall. The lobby, in a former sea captains house, has a comfy, slightly dated feeling, with a knotty pine foyer and a pink and green décor. Children under 16 are only permitted to visit at certain times and children under 5 are never allowed.
Guest Rooms at Cambridge Beaches:
Cambridge Beaches 94 cottages, all with pink exteriors, have a beachy feeling, tile floors, a terrace, and casual furnishings. Some are 300 years old and others recently built. Each has a different décor and a different name: Hibiscus, Morning Glory, Sunset. Almost all have either a garden or sea view, as well as a whirlpool tub. Cottage rooms consist of a single room, while suites and signature cottages have one or two bedrooms plus a living room. The resorts three pool suites have a plunge pool on the outdoor patio. All have internet access, a small refrigerator, a CD player, and standard amenities.
Dining at Cambridge Beaches:
Cambridge Beaches has three restaurants. The sophisticated Tamarisk Room, with salmon-colored walls, is considered one of Bermudas top restaurants and features international cuisines, mostly French. Breezes, a more casual open air eatery on the beach, allows guests to choose the fish they want grilled for dinner. Shutters is a relaxed poolside eatery with sandwiches and salads. Couples can enjoy dinner on the beach, sitting with their feet in the water surrrounded by tiki torches.
Destination Weddings at Cambridge Beaches:
Weddings at Cambridge Beaches are limited to 50 people, and at least half must stay at the resort. The resorts wedding planner works with local vendors to provide flowers and other details. Most couples hold their ceremony on one of the beaches. The resorts Magical Wedding Package for two includes a room service breakfast, champagne on arrival and at the ceremony, a candlelight dinner on the beach, a spa pass for certain facilities, a double moped or kayak excursion, a couples massage, two robes, and the wedding coordinators services. A three- or four-night stay is required, depending on the season.
Activities at Cambridge Beaches:
Cambridge Beaches has four small beaches, a spacious indoor pool in the spa, an elegant outdoor infinity pool, and three tennis courts. The Sky Deck, an outdoor relaxation area above the pool, has a clothing-optional policy. The Ocean Spa has a fitness center with treadmills and other machines. Equipment is available for numerous water sports including kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and snorkeling. The resort can arrange for guests to play at any of Bermudas golf courses including Port Royal, only ten minutes away and the home of the PGA Grand Slam in 2009 and 2010.
Spa at Cambridge Beaches:
The Ocean Spa plays a big role at Cambridge Beaches, since the resort emphasizes rejuvenation, largely through alternative therapies. The elegant facility has seven treatment rooms, an aroma steam room, an herbal sauna, and the Ocean Spa Pagoda, in which couples can enjoy privacy with views of both gardens and the ocean. Couples treatments include an aromatherapy massage, a couples massage with music and candlelight, and a massage lesson, with the couple practicing on each other. The Island Escape package includes the lesson, a picnic hamper, aromatherapy massages and facials, and his-and-hers pedicures.
Pool at Cambridge Beaches:
The pool at Cambridge Beaches is an absolute stunner. While its not huge, it has infinity edges on two sides and is surrounded by a multi-level deck made of striking rust-colored Egyptian sandstone. The pool area overlooks one of the resorts beaches and is conveniently located next to Shutters, a casual outdoor eatery with sandwiches, salads, and cold drinks.
Is Cambridge Beaches Right For You?:
Cambridge Beaches has an old-money feeling that not everyone will feel comfortable amidst. The resorts recent shift to rejuvenation through New Age treatments and alternative therapies seems out of synch with its subdued, yacht-club ambience. The pool area is spectacular, thanks to the multi-level deck. But some of the interiors seem a bit tired, especially the lobby, which could use an update. Cambridge Beaches may appeal more to an older, country-club crowd rather than to than young newlyweds in search of fun and frolic.
