Sea Breeze Beach Hotel in Barbados

Barbados is at its liveliest in the southernmost parish of Christ Church, with the boardwalk along the Saint Lawrence Gap district filled with restaurants and nightlife. The area's all-inclusive Sea Breeze Beach Hotel is set among tranquil bougainvillea and palm gardens, but it’s also well-situated for couples looking to take advantage of the local buzz. The capital, Bridgetown, is just a short jaunt away for shopping and more island "liming” (partying).

Most of the 78 rooms have cool tile floors and a balcony or patio with ocean views. Sliding glass doors let in plenty of light, and air conditioning is welcome when the humidity hangs heavy. Firm king or two queen beds and rattan furniture fill out the rooms, most of which are decorated either in pastels or vibrant tropical hues. The pool/garden view rooms overlook the beach at the property’s far end, while the best choice for honeymooners or couples are the deluxe ocean view rooms.

The Sea Breeze’s main Mermaid restaurant is open for a buffet breakfast with fresh fruits; lunch and dinner are à la carte. Buffet dinner are also available. For mid-day noshing by the pool or beach, the Prezzo beach bar serves fish and chips, stone-fired pizza, sandwiches, and salads. While two dinners in the property’s new fine casual-elegant restaurant Azul are included, couples may wish to spring more often to hang in its inviting lounge. Among the menu standouts are macadamia nut-encrusted Chilean sea bass, and an Angus beef steak.

The entire property is available for weddings with up to 130 guests. Top venues are the private cabana and the gazebo overlooking the surf. Couples can also say their vows in the gardens, on the Azul restaurant’s balcony, or on the beach itself. Packages cover legal fees and use of an on-site wedding planner. Sparkling wine, flowers in the room, a wedding cake, and recorded music are included, as are a bride’s tropical posy and groom’s boutonniere. A couples breakfast is served the following morning. A honeymoon package includes a room upgrade, bottle of sparkling wine, and cliffside dining.

Plenty of umbrellas and sturdy chaise longues line the Sea Breeze’s soft, white main beach, but couples may prefer the rugged and secluded beach to the right. A crew of young fellows at the beach shack hand out water equipment, and sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, body boarding and snorkeling can be arranged. Three Jacuzzis are adults-only. The no-frills gym has elliptical machines and stair climbers. The Healing Arts Spa offers Swedish, deep tissue, and hot stone massage. Their Sugar Glow Scrub mixes brown sugar and oils. The Romantic Couples massage takes place in a candlelit beach cabana.

The island highlight, St. Nicholas Abbey, is a 350-year-old plantation house in the north with period furniture and a mahogany forest just right for a private couple’s walk. Sweethearts can also follow the paths in Hunte’s Gardens, a secluded ravine brimming with ferns, heliconia and plump Buddha statues (it’s also a wedding venue). Visitors tour antiques-filled rooms at the 18th-century Sunbury sugar estate. The Mount Gay rum tasting center makes for a fine finish to the day. A short drive away from the Sea Breeze, the Oistins fish fry is a legendary weekend social event.

The walk from the cool open-air lobby to the far end reaches of the property can be a trek when it's humid. Wi-fi doesn’t extend to the further ends of the property, either. There are no lifts to second and third floor rooms. Outdated in-room safes are of the non-laptop-size, and clunky-key-lock variety. And pool bar areas can get crowded at times.

British holidaymakers of all ages make up the majority of Sea Breeze's clientele. Families are welcome but couples can find plenty of privacy. Mingling takes place around the bar at the far-end pool, whereas the scene at the adults-only pool is slightly more chill. Drinks are available on the beach but a quiet vibe reigns where sunbathing is taken seriously. In the land that produced Rihanna, the live music cover bands are hugely talented and draw evening crowds to the Mermaid lounge where drinks flow.
