Green Turtle Club in the Bahamas

This property’s simply appointed on-site Club restaurant is a magnet not just for visitors to the resort but for guests at other hotels on the island and for locals, too. (Green Turtle Cay has a year-round population of about a thousand, and many well-heeled second homeowners from the U.S. and the U.K. ferry in and out.)

The Club Restaurant offers a wide-ranging menu, but is at its best with seafood that was caught locally that day, such as grouper, mahi-mahi, or Caribbean lobster. All other provisions, save for a bit of produce, are imported to the island, and not nearly as tempting as the chef’s ocean-sweet fish.

Reservations are required for the restaurant, the earlier the better to snag a coveted outdoor table overlooking the marina and White Sound Harbour. Diners are also asked to choose their entrée by 5pm. Reservations are not necessary for breakfast or lunch at the Club Restaurant.

Green Turtle’s bar—with conversation-inducing stools as well as cushy chairs—opens at an indulgent 11am. The walls of the bar are a ready-made photo op: they are covered with paper money, mainly U.S. singles, signed by their drinker-donors. As elsewhere in the Bahamas, cocktails are simple, hyper-sweet affairs concocted with packaged fruit juice. Like libations on all of the Bahamas’ tourism-savvy islands, the drinks are strong.
