First of the new wave of Atlantic City casino hotels, the Borgata is an upscale oasis on the city's marina side.Its exterior is clad in a golden mirrored material. Internally the hotel is well lit, clean, expensively decorated (marble and mosaic floors, Dale Chihuly tonal glass sculptures), and filled with eateries that range from Starbucks to The Old Homestead.
The Borgata attracts a noticeably younger and better-dressed crowd than the city's other casino hotels.

Standard guest rooms at the Borgata feature floor-to-ceiling windows with views that overlook the skyline and stretch to the Atlantic Ocean. Decorated in tasteful neutral tones, rooms include a mini-fridge, TV with Web access, plug for high-speed Internet access, and safe.There is no bathtub. Instead, there's an excellent marble shower that's big enough for two and has a rack holding generous bath sheets rather than skimpy bath towels.

Like every casino hotel, there's a buffet at the Borgata where breakfast (complete with smoked salmon), lunch, and dinner are served.Big appetites and wallets go for The Old Homestead steakhouse, where waiters heft brontosaurus-sized portions.
Those with more discerning palates may prefer Ombra, which features palate-pleasing Italian creations such as arancini, crisp risotto fritters filled with black truffles and scallions. Michael Mina's SEABLUE brings forth fanciful creations from the deep; lobster corndogs, anyone? There's also a pricey Chinese restaurant and Asian-fusion eatery.

Despite 30 years of legalized gaming in Atlantic City, the city remains poor and neglected. Local newscasters reported nine shootings in the first month of 2006 alone.The once corny-but-charming Boardwalk is filled primarily with cheap stores, cash-for-gold storefronts, psychics, and other bottom feeders. There is a new but near-deserted outlet mall by the Atlantic City bus station but parking space is a mystery. My advice: If you go to Borgata, spend your entire Atlantic City visit inside it.
