What Could Be Improved at Royal Palms Resort and Spa

• We arrived at the resort at check-in time, about 3 p.m. We walked by the pool to our casita, and later, went out to the pool to relax before dinner. Between 3 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. no one picked up abandoned towels or cleaned up dirty glasses at the pool.

• Our casita was lovely, and very freshly painted. We didn't ask for another room, but the smell might have bothered other guests. The drapes had not yet been replaced after the renovation (empty rods and drapery rings were still on the wall).

• Royal Palms Resort and Spa has a cozy bar with live music. We planned to stop by and enjoy an after-dinner drink, but the smoke from the adjoining cigar room changed our minds. (Note: Smoking is no longer permitted in the Cigar Room.) So, after dinner at T. Cook's, we returned to our room at about 9:15 p.m.

• Our champagne had been delivered and the bed was turned down — but no rose petals! A call to the front desk confirmed that we were booked for the Royal Romance Package. The man on the phone apologized that we hadn't received our turndown. We waited 20 minutes for housekeeping to arrive and perform the petal deed while we watched. Not very romantic, and it would be a disappointment for anyone wanting to achieve a special romantic feeling for just that one night's stay.
