What to Expect at the Fairmont Algonquin:

The best full-service resort in the picturesque New Brunswick village of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, the Fairmont Algonquin aka "Castle by-the-Sea," has been welcoming vacationers since 1889.

In summer its iconic mock-Tudor architecture is brightened by colorful garden blooms. Facilities include an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, golf course, and spa. The hotel is walking distance to town.

Guest Rooms at the Fairmont Algonquin:

Calm, clean, and comfortably furnished, guest rooms at the Fairmont Algonquin are located in the original building and an adjacent newer wing. Only those in the latter are air-conditioned.

Rooms in the newer wing are generally more spacious, with a work desk and chair plus a larger table with two comfortable chairs and an ottoman. The dial-up connection to high-speed Internet (fee) is swift and easy. The only negatives: bathtubs fit just one person and TVs are ancient.

Dining at the Fairmont Algonquin:

The Passamaquoddy Dining Room at the Fairmont Algonquin has a dark, cool, somewhat formal interior with a greenhouse-like perimeter whose tables overlook the front gardens.

The menu includes Maritime ingredients and local seafood as well as meatier fare. Breakfast guests have a choice of buffet or waiter service. The Right Whale Pub & Grill in the basement is a relaxed setting where local brews are served. After dinner, nightcaps are served on the Algonquin's expansive porch.

Weddings at the Fairmont Algonquin :

Brides and grooms have said their vows at the Fairmont Algonquin for centuries. Indoors or outdoors, there are many scenic settings for a ceremony. Wedding packages that include catered receptions and accommodations for the couple (suite upgrade when available) are available at various price levels.

Honeymoon at the Fairmont Algonquin:

The Fairmont Platinum Honeymoon Program is open to couples who wed at a Fairmont Hotel. A Platinum Concierge can coordinate plans and assist a couple with travel arrangements at any Fairmont hotel.

Nearby the Fairmont Algonquin:

It's a five-minute walk to the small, quaint town of St. Andrews-by-the-Sea (think Bar Harbor, without the crowds). Browse in the shops (we had a hard time deciding which scents made at Garden by the Sea Soaps we loved most), have an espresso overlooking the harbor, or head to the wharf for a day of kayaking or whale-watching.

Also close by: an aquarium, movie theater, Tim Horton's (Canada's answer to Dunkin Donuts), and a golf course, where you can check the length of shots using a GPS.

Is the Fairmont Algonquin Right for You?:

If you appreciate a traditional (but not stuffy) hotel in a beautiful setting where you can be as active or as relaxed as you want, you're likely to appreciate the Fairmont Algonquin. The pace is slow, the setting glorious, the staff accommodating. Don't expect to find much nightlife in the hotel or little town nearby. But who needs that on a romantic getaway?
