Travelers accustomed to cheap lodgings or boutique hotels may regard Sofitel the Grand Amsterdam as formal and expensive.

Yet those who can afford a stay are likely to consider it well worth the splurge. A landmark property with impressive provenance, Sofitel the Grand Amsterdam enjoys a good location; has a fine, responsive staff; and provides a uniquely lovely setting for a romantic getaway or wedding weekend.

A caveat: Until the renovation is complete in 2009, guests who stay in older rooms during warm weather may encounter weak and unresponsive air-conditioning in their quarters. The problem should be ameliorated when the new rooms are available.

A small quibble: As a French-owned hotel, Sofitel the Grand Amsterdam stocks its bathrooms with overperfumed toiletries by the Gallic firm of Roger & Gallet. I was told these will be replaced by an Hermès line, the scent of which one hopes will be subtler.

Aside those very minor issues, the Sofitel the Grand Amsterdam is a privileged place for a pair of lovers to nest while exploring romantic Amsterdam.
