INLINE SKATING EXPERT: KATHIE FRY
What is it people love about
your sport?
It's fun fun fun to zoom along on skates!...It's the perfect
exercise for the legs, thighs, hips, and abdomen....It is one
of the best calorie burners. (When I skate for an hour every
day, it's difficult for me to keep my weight above 100 pounds)....Skates
are very portable. They don't require a rack on your car....Bringing
your skates when you travel for pleasure or business is a great
way to go sightseeing, meet the locals, and continue your exercise
routine when you are away from home.
Level of difficulty for
beginners (1=low > 10=high):
5. Anybody can learn to skate, but they should take at least
one lesson from a trained professional. Taking a skating lesson
together would be a fun and exciting thing for a couple to do,
especially if they honeymooned in a beautiful place to skate.
Essential equipment a beginner
must buy/can't rent:
Usually everything can be rented at skate shops, and near many
bike paths, especially if honeymooners are at a popular skating
destination. But just in case, this is the essential equipment:
skates, helmet, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads.
What should every first-timer know?
A. Wear a helmet and body protection.
B. Take a lesson.
C. Learn to use your heel brake.
What separates the amateurs
from the pros?
AMATEURS:
A. Skate with their legs straight.
B. Skate with a short stride (caused by "A" above).
C. Never bother learning to use their heel brake.
PROS (OR NON-BEGINNERS ANYWAY)
A. Keep their legs deeply bent and their back straight.
B. Skate with a long, powerful stride.
C. Can slam on their heel brake with no danger of falling.
In your personal opinion,
where's the best resort or destination to practice the activity?
There are so many places
all over the world, but if I have to pick one, I guess I would
say Venice Beach and Santa Monica Beach in California.
