Book Review:
The Secret Caribbean:
Hideaways of the Rich & Famous

If you're interested in finding out where the poshest, most ultraluxe resorts in the Caribbean are located and what their specific attractions are, "The Secret Caribbean" is for you.

Destinations covered in the book are:
 Anguilla  Cancún  Puerto Rico
 Antigua  Cayman Islands  St. Barts
 Aruba  Grenada  St. Kitts
 Barbados  Jamaica  St. Lucia
 Barbuda  Mustique  St. Maarten
British Virgin Islands  Nevis  U.S. Virgin Islands

Note: Links lead to Honeymoons articles and tourism sites, not chapters in this book.

Each chapter offers a map, a bit of history, info on airline service, island facts, and local as well as U.S. tourism office addresses and phone numbers. That's followed by a limited selection of deluxe resorts you don't have to be famous to stay at...but it certainly helps if you've got a big bank account. Rates, recreational activities, and reservation numbers (but not URLs) are included.

The writing is romantic and evocative. Author Brooke Comer describes Cap Juluca, on Anguilla:

"Oceanside villas, with exotic domes and arches of Moorish design, are bathed in the last golden sunlight while the sea deepens to another shade of blue and the air is fragrant with the heady scent of jasmine and frangipani."

When an island boasts an exceptional restaurant, that too is cited. For example, at Miss June's on Nevis, Oprah and Stedman, the Stevens Seagal and Tyler, have all savored fare at this eatery

"set with lace tablecloths and crystal goblets and lit by candlelight."

Note: If you pick up "The Secret Caribbean" expecting a map to the stars' vacation spots, you may be disappointed. Bold face names are limited, considering the book's title. And when they occur (as in Barbados: "Mia and Frank Sinatra came for their honeymoon"), they're generally not Gen X.

But if you're lucky enough to afford a dream vacation, let this book guide you. It spotlights extraordinary island resorts where you can become the star of your own movie, set in a tropical paradise.
