From New England's tallest mountains to Portsmouth harbor, from the New Castle site of the first act against the British in the Revolutionary War to the country's oldest crafts fair in Sunapee, New Hampshire offers vacationers in search of fun and history much to see and do.

Traveling along country roads, you'll encounter small villages, covered bridges, and incredible views. A few years ago, the White Mountains Trail was designated a national scenic and cultural byway, the only one in northern New England to receive this distinction. This looping, 100-mile-long route takes you past mountains and rivers, wetlands and woodlands, historic sites and structures.

Overlooking sparkling Lake Winnepesaukee and the Ossipee Mountains, Castle in the Clouds on Castle Spring Estate in Moultonborough is an historic mansion that's preserved the craftsmanship of a bygone era. Take time out on a warm summer's day to sample a premium handcrafted Lucknow beer or ale from the local microbrewery.

For an extraordinary overnight experience, stay at the historic Stonehurst Manor, located in North Conway in the White Mountains. Or visit a grand hotel like The Balsams and the Mount Washington Hotel, which since the turn of the century has perfected the art of making guests feel welcome.

Art lovers will appreciate a visit to the home, gardens, and studios of Augustus Saint-Gaudens (1848-1907), one of America's foremost sculptors. The Saint-Gaudens National Historic Site in Cornish consists of 150 acres including two hiking trails in the surrounding park.

Another historic landmark, Shaker Village in Canterbury, maintains 25 of this utopian society's original buildings and offers a guided tour that looks at the customs, inventions, furniture, and architecture of this sect that believed in the virtues of a simple life.
