Romantic Resorts in the Western US

By Susan Breslow Sardone, About.com

If you live in the Western US and don't have much time to honeymoon, you can experience a world of luxury not too far from home.

Whether you're looking for a fabulous ski resort in Idaho that just happens to be a top-rated hotel, an antiques-filled gem in Arizona, or a pampering spa deep in the heart of Texas, you can have your wish in the Western US:

The Inn at Semiahmoo
Blaine, Washington

Once the site of the Alaska Packers Salmon Cannery, The Inn at Semiahmoo is a scenic and romantic getaway at the very end of a peninsula off the northwestern tip of Washington.

To one side there's a 300-slip marina, where guests may rent a variety of boats to explore the clean waters and breathe the salt air of Puget Sound.

Within the resort's four-story gray clapboard buildings are 200 rooms, some containing fireplaces. (Make sure to request one of these when you make a reservation.)

Semiahmoo Resort encompasses Washington’s top two public courses: Semiahmoo Golf & Country Club and Loomis Trail Golf Club. Skiers find the slopes at Mt. Baker and Grouse Mountain challenging.

For indoor workouts, the health club offers tennis courts, a running track, an aerobics studio, exercise room, heated swimming pool, and racquetball, squash, and handball courts. The Spa at Semiahmoo offers an extensive menu of treatments and services. There is also a sauna, whirlpool, and separate massage area.

Deep-fried prawns, plump steamers, raw oysters, and curly fries tempt the palate at Packers Oyster Bar & Lounge. For formal dining, Stars restaurant, where a pianist plays at a baby grand, draws an appreciative crowd. Local seafood dishes predominate, and specialties include roast duckling, salmon en papilotte, and crab canneloni Florentine. There are also low-cholesterol choices available.
